Advantages: some solid songs
Disadvantages: missing some hits
It is perhaps little surprise that the so called best of Haddaway comprises a mere ten songs. If you like your mid nineties eurodance then you will probably be familiar with his anthemic top five smash 'What Is Love' which spent a couple of months around the higher region of the chart when it was released.
Haddaway followed up with some less successful singles and is curious to see that some of these have actually been left off this album!
'What Is Love' opns the album up. His deep vocals command the track while a soaring synth riff carries through a dynamic melody. It is similar to the kind of thing Corona and Cappella were doing at the time. Catchy and instant, it has dated a little yet remains a staple part of any cheesy dancefloor.
Haddaway's 'Life' is another belter with worldly lyrics in which he proclaims life will never be the same and that life is changing. Despite the attempt at deep and meaningful content, the song is much in the guise of his first hit, so you won't be too disappointed.
Head to the anthemic 'Rock My Heart' which delivers a gripping vocal and an insanely hooky chorus. It uses the same formula as before and ups the ante a little as the chorus has even more kick to it.
'Stir It Up' is sufficient, though lacks the bite of the aforementioned. Haddaway's vocals do have a soulful tinge here though and he seems to be getting quite sensual as he delivers some steamy stuff.
The album is let down as it does not include the stunning ballad 'I Miss You' which would have provided some balance in styles too. It also is missing 'Catch A Fire' which was a minor success. Despite these flaws, the ten tracks are all of a solid enough standard and his vocals are actually a cut above what you might expect for a eurodance artist. Slick cover artwork completes the package.
Summary: not bad

- 30/08/09 I can't not move my head along to What is Love after that Jim Carey thing. I don't even like Carey. Great review |
