... interpretation of ?Confusion? warps it into a powerful, unrelenting kick of progressive house. Biff & Memphis twist ?Touched By The Hand Of God? into a ten-minute trance epic ? but not ?trance? in the Ferry Corsten / ATB sense of the word. ?Trance? as in a mellow, smooth introduction slowly gathering pace and forming a clipped, bass-driven track which complements Sumner?s vocals in a new and interesting way. Sadly Armand van Helden?s version of ?Bizarre Love Triangle? is disappointing and strikes the only wrong note on...more

Premium Review The Best Of New Order - New Order: Essential Collection (696 words)

Rating:

?The Rest Of??, released in 1995, is an alternative CD to ?The Best Of?? featuring cracking remixes of ten New Order tracks. Where other bands struggle to pull off decent remix albums, New Order accomplish it brilliantly. A number of highly rated producers are behind this collection, which starts off with ?World? remixed by Perfecto (who have charted recently with ?Not Over Yet? and ?Bullet In The Gun?). This is a more conventional mix compared with what is in store ? a simple extended version drawing out the distinctive piano sequences of the original. Track 3, Shep Pettibone?s version of ?True Faith?, is similarly conservative in approach, more or less simply ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 15 years of electropop (376 words)

New Order's 'Best Of' is certainly a patchy affair, but as such summarises the group's output over its fifteen years or so in the business, from the early 1980s to 1993's excellent REPUBLIC album. New Order apparently are still going as a band, with new stuff out at the end of the year, but i'll believe that when I see it. The album here is bookended by some great tracks, but it falls apart throughout the middle five or six: tracks such as 'Finetime', 'Shellshock', 'Perfect Kiss' and 'Thieves Like Us' really are just overblow electro knob-twiddling and go on far too long without really going anywhere, and ...  Read the complete review

For anybody who liked the recent New Order single 'Crystal' this compilation is the perfect way to get acquainted with their back catalogue. Since the album covers over a decade of music it is only the briefest glimpse of the group's successful career. The majority of their best known songs are there and a few have even undergone a slight facelift to bring them up to date. Even if you can't recognise many of the titles, once you listen you will instantly remember and be humming along in no time. The album starts with an update of the classic 'True Faith', as with the majority of the remixes on the album sounds almost identical ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Best of New Order (317 words)

Just how good were New Order? If measured in commercial terms their later success flattered the indifference the record buying public had shown towards them for over 5 years. This led to a new interest in their back catalogue and many people retrospectively mined the gold they had been producing for years. They had huge critical acclaim with every single and album and had cult status through the performances at The Hacienda club in Manchester. To have critical acclaim, public cult status and commercial success is a hat-trick few bands achieve and I can name only one other band - Manic Street Preachers - who come close. (the best of) New Order is in my view an ...  Read the complete review
