If there was ever a need to write a national anthem for Halloween, Nick Cave and his band of unmerry Bad Seeds should definetly be blessed with that accolade. Though I'm not a diehard Cave fan (especially having only purchased this album recently), this best of collection is definetly a good place to start, stop or bridge a collection, and I'm wholeheartedly glad that I bought this album based on tracks that I heard previously. 'The Best of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' is a retrospective that spans 10 years, and 13 albums. The liner notes refer to the songs here as reference points from a much larger journey - these notes also tale Cave's rise ... Read the complete review

Nick Cave and the Bad seeds put their best songs together on an album and this is what we end up with. A sixteen track CD, wich has songs dating right through their career together (almost). Cave got with the Bad seeds in 1984 and this album goes as far back as that an all the way upto 1997 (The boatmans call). The album takes songs from each of the albums in this time peroid (though as the inlay booklet confess, not in chronological order). In life, there are some pleasures you must have in order to enjoy it to the full. A CD player, a bottle of Jack Daniels and Nick Cave's Greatest Hits takes some whacking when it comes to raw enjoyment. Unfairly labelled as 'The Master of Doom and Gloom', Nick Cave is not only intelligent and sensitive but blessed with a wickedly dry wit. True, one look at his haunted face is unlikely to do a lot for record sales amongst the faint hearted, but to miss out on his unique talent would be a grave mistake. For those unfamiliar with the great mans work, this is an excellent introduction. It covers all aspects of his work, from the manic intensity ... Read the complete review

Nick Cave is a unique songwriter and one of the few who could reasonably be called a genius. This is not the opinion of an undiscriminating fan - some of his work is not my type of thing - but even where the song is not something I like it's always plain to see the skill and art in its construction. A very dark body of work, Cave mixes in themes of love, violence, lust and seediness but always with a clever melody to back it up. The Bad Seeds are a band that do not always have the tightest arrangements but you can hear the interplay and the sheer love of playing together as a band in all their songs. The best tracks include 'Red Right Hand', a ... Read the complete review

Eclectic folk metal.
A little too similar to other bands on occasion.

Well-executed, and not over-the-top.
Bland and samey.
