Advantages: Intelligent, sensitive words with tunes to die for.
Disadvantages: Don't be put off by his deathly pallor!
In life, there are some pleasures you must have in order to enjoy it to the full. A CD player, a bottle of Jack Daniels and Nick Cave's Greatest Hits takes some whacking when it comes to raw enjoyment. Unfairly labelled as 'The Master of Doom and Gloom', Nick Cave is not only intelligent and sensitive but blessed with a wickedly dry wit. True, one look at his haunted face is unlikely to do a lot for record sales amongst the faint hearted, but to miss out on his unique talent would be a grave mistake. For those unfamiliar with the great mans work, this is an excellent introduction. It covers all aspects of his work, from the manic intensity of 'Mercy Seat' to the movingly plaintive sweep of 'The Weeping Song'. The excellent collaborations, 'Henry Lee' with Polly Harvey and 'Where The Wild Roses Grow' with Kylie Minogue, are naturally included. One listen to 'Straight To You' and the song will be etched in your heart forever. The man has a genuine talent to say what you feel, in apparently simple terms, but in words you can never conjure up yourself. Here are songs which reveal secrets of other worlds, songs about people and their relationships, songs about the aching fragility of love. If you still feel that Nick Cave is someone to be avoided in a dark alley, just a note for you. 'Red Right Hand' is given a substantial airing at the start of 'Dumb and Dumber', whilst 'Into My Arms' was played on 'Home and Away' whilst Marilyn was having marital difficulties with Donald! Does that sound like a nasty musician to be avoided? Take a chance and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

- 14/03/01 I don't know why but no one ever wants to talk about the actual music, just the song names and cd sleeves. Grrrr. I like your opinion but it just doesnt have the information I was looking for :O) |

- 08/03/01 I'm so pleased that you wrote and that this category exists. His music is sublime, i've heard nothing like it. If you haven't listened to The boatman's Call, do, it is too good for words to describe it. It sounds like his new album, out very soon, is following a similar vein. Have you seen him live? The man is so intense, what a performer! |
