THE BEST OF THE POGUES RELEASED: 1991 Accordion/Piano - James Fearnley Citern/Vocals - Terry Woods Guitar/Vocals - Philip Chevron Tin Whistle/Vocals - Spider Stacey Banjo/Saxophone - Jem Finer Drums/Vocals - Andrew Ranken Lead Vocals/Guitar - Shane MacGowan Bass/Vocals - Darryl Hunt ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Back in the mid 1980s when I first saw The Pogues on Top Of The Pops, I pretty much wrote them off, very unfairly biasing myself away from them, as I allowed Shane MacGowan's appearance to have a negative influence on me. Apart from Fairy Tale Of New York (which we all are so ... Read the complete review

My dad got this for christmas 2 years ago and I have to admit I slagged him off for having it something chronic! However recently I have started to really like the pogues due to the advent of Napster; all my uni friends download constantly and they came across the Pogues through Fairytale Of New York, their most famous song. Before long everyone in the house was fake jigging around the room while singing the lyrics we had downloaded from the Net. I like to say that I liked them way back when but the truth is that I dissed them way back when!! The Pogues are James Fearnley, Terry Woods, Philip Chevron, Spider Stacy, Jem Finer, Andrew Ranken, Darryl Hunt and most ... Read the complete review

Some people think I drink too much - I think I drink just about enough, Shane McGowan. This man is a lyrical genius, The pogues, musical wizards that combine some authentic Irish music with modern day lyrics and meaning. So when I decided to get a 'best of' from itunes, even though I have a fair few of these tracks anyway, I was happy to pay £7.99 for 14 songs, absolute bargain. The songs, please note that the order of the CD is different from the order listed on itunes: 1. Fairytale Of New York Is there a human being in the Western world that does not know this song? A collaboration with the late Kirsty McColl, probably the best ... Read the complete review

The Pogues have written some great songs and this collection is an excellent introduction to Shane McGowan's song writing talent. The disc contains a good selection from their various albums with both the raucous hell for leather, breakneck tunes like Streams of Whiskey, Sally McLennan and Fiesta up against McGowan's slower more soulful melodies such as A Pair of Brown Eyes and a Rainy Night in Soho. Although this compact disc is a good introduction to the band it does miss much of their first and best album 'Red Roses for Me'. The songs on this compilation are not the fourteen I would choose to highlight the Pogue's best music. Personally I would recommend getting hold ... Read the complete review

Hard House Nation Vol.2: Mixed By Lisa Pin-up & Andy Farley - Lisa Pin-Up
Two big-name DJ's strut their stuff in this double CD compilation. Some excellent tunes, and still retains some credibility even though it is a commercial release.
Certainly not easily-accessible listening, those who were expecting 40 "Operation Blade" soundalikes are seriously deluded!
De La Soul Is Dead - De La Soul
Lots of bangers
Lots of interludes and sort tracks
The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow
