Up At The Lake - The Charlatans
by kfingleton - written on 18/08/04 (Very useful, 186 readings)
Rating:
1. Up At The Lake (3:45) Things begin well enough with the first single from the album, the title track. However, it?s hardly a startling effort. The Charlatans have released b-sides better than this one (though they have released some damn good b-sides). It neither has the instant appeal of 1997?s With No Shoes, nor the building majesty of Us & Us Only?s opener Forever. It?s a solid track, much like most of the albums the band has delivered. 2. Feel The Pressure (3:35) It doesn?t sound too promising at first, but if we ignore the annoying ?du-du-du-du? beginning to Feel The Pressure, it?s a decent cut. Wonderland - Charlatans

It’s hard to believe that The Charlatans have just produced their seventh album (compilations excluded). Not only have they survived baggy and Britpop but a series of personal tragedies that include line-up changes, jail sentences and death. Gone is the indie image of Tellin’ Stories and the cut-n-past look of the almost retrospect Us & Us Only. The Charlatans are brimming with swagger and ...
Wonderland - Charlatans

Like some music hack said recently, The Charlatans have joined Primal Scream in being an old band band but also compulsive and fresh at the same time. In fact, most of the album sounds like they jumped back in time to The Scream's songs between 'Screamadelica' and 'Give Out But Don't Give Up'. This is not, repeat NOT a bad thing. In fact it is magical at times. The standout track on offer is the mesmerising 'Ballad Of The Band', nearly six minutes of a journey through the dark side of life. 'Come with ...
