Advantages: intelligent lyrics
Disadvantages: not many hits
Everyone likes a smattering of Pet Shop Boys once in a while. I have been known to play them into the small hours, quietly wishing I was the third unseen member of the group. Neil and Chris' unique brand of pop has an intellect about it and a certain upper class charm.
Who are they:
Very English pop group, Neil Tennant on vocals and Chris Lowe on keyboards. They write their own material.
On this album:
The album gets off on a good foot with 'Discoteca' putting the stamp on what is to come. Not outright disco, but a mid-tempo affair which could entice you to dance. Neil's vocals sound fresh and upbeat and the programming of the synths on this is worth checking out.
Highlights:
Head for 'Se A Vida E,' which will lift the spirits with the summery melody. I am not sure what Tennant is singing in the chorus, but the song conjures up images of splashing in warm oceans and frolicking on beaches. It is one of their lighter moments. Also check out 'Red Letter Day' which has an affirming melody and some inspirational lyrics. The song is firmly in a pop mould and Tennant seems to be in his element here. For something more restrained listen to 'Before' which is quite a harrowing song. The vocals are hollow sounding and the song will leave you feeling empty with its bleak lyrics.
Overall:
Not their strongest album, but a must for fans. You get twelve tracks for your money and some original compositions. The trouble is with this one, there aren't that many songs where you will go 'oh yes I know that one,' but it is still a polished affair.
Summary: engaging

- 18/02/09 I liked their old stuff but I don't think this is a must even for fans - a rather weak effort. |
