      Carpathian Forest's first album (1998).

The long-awaited debut album from Carpathian Forest is an entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying mix between the atmospheric black metal of their previous demo and E.P. releases and the more typical second wave black metal of the nineties, with songs alternating in their preference for either style. While I ultimately prefer the former, the band seems to have lost its knack for crafting excellent atmospheric music as they managed on 'Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern' and 'Through Chasm, Cave and Titan Woods,' with only 'Death Triumphant' and 'The Northern Hemisphere' going any way towards striking an enjoyable balance.

The other slow offerings are mostly dispensable, from the overlong interlude 'Lupus' to the mediocre Burzum worship of 'Lunar Nights' and a cover of the Cure's definitive gothic classic 'A Forest' that inevitably failed to meet my high expectations (a forest-themed black metal band covering this song and making a good job of it would perhaps be too good to be true).

The rest of the album is fairly samey but enjoyable for anyone fond of second-wave black metal from the likes of Emperor and Immortal. The standard ingredients are all there, from the guttural rasping vocals to the tremolo-picking, treble-heavy guitars and constant blast beats of the drums, but ultimately the only thing to distinguish this album from the competition is the surprising prominence of the bass guitar; not enough to save it from mediocrity.
