Advantages: Tranquil, beautiful, amazing in all forms

Disadvantages: None

This was my introductory album to Opeth, and remains my favourite to this day. Notably this album was produced by friend of Mikael Akerfeldt and self-taught guitarist, pianoist, studio-producer and frontman of English progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson.

Due to being produced by Steve, several of his effects, styles and methods were implemented through working with Mikael, and personally I find the two of them an unbeatable progressive rock/metal duo, so those two in the studio means a certain "this is going to be brilliant."

The album features variations between the more raw death metal tracks such as "The Funeral Portrait", the beautiful hybrids of death metal and ambient acoustic such as "Bleak" and the tranquil, amazing acoustic tracks like "Harvest" which take you elsewhere.

As with all of Opeth's releases, the guitarwork, the drumwork, and the backgrounded acoustic/ambient effects are vivid, emotional and spectacular, which will leave you with a feeling or emotional attachment to certain songs.

Mikael's vocal style is as great as ever, there seems to be a well refined balance between death metal vocals and clean vocals on this release. His clean vocals being absolutely beautiful.

All in all, I highly recommend this album. To fans of progressive rock, metal, ambient, acoustic and death metal alike.

Summary: An amazing album produced by Steven Wilson, with varied styles throughout

One of my favourite Opeth albums, though I thought they started to get worse when they involved Wilson (I love early Porcupine Tree though).
