Advantages: Awesome songs and a killer instrumental
Disadvantages: 'Obvious' is a little bland
The latest Blink 182 album, barring their greatest hits, came as a bit of a shock to fans but highlights the versatility of the band and their exceptional talent as musicians. The self-titled album is a stunning masterpiece full of far deeper and meaningful songs, in contrast to their earlier, more humourous and immature material, complimented perfectly by unrivalled technical ability.
The album consists of 16 great tracks, including a live performance of Anthem Part 2 and a superb mini-booklet (you know the bit that slides in front of the CD case!) containing all the lyrics and a nice little touch detailing the band's thoughts and motivations that led them to writing each song and the composition of the sounds involved.
'Blink-182' is a far more mature album that shows how far the band have come. The sounds quality is top class and the vocals so appropriate to fit the overall vibe of the record. The album comprises of fast and slower songs, each one producing a unique sound, rather than their past slightly repetitive (yet successful) formula. Singles include Feeling This, I Miss You, Down, Always and Not Now - all of which are gems in their own right. The only average track in my opinion is Obvious, while Violence (the effects/sound of this is exquisite) and Here's Your Letter are other notable favourites.
Each member of the trio displays superb ability here, especially Tom and Travis, who pulls out some insane drum beats (as always!). Overall, an incredible album that I was at first dubious about, but the more you listen the greater your appreciation becomes until you start calling it your favourite! If their next album is as half as good as this then I cannot wait!
Summary: Buy it if you even remotely like this genre of music...it's a must!
