Souljacker - Eels
by robqueen - written on 09/10/01 (Very useful, 36 readings)
Rating:
in them, but here's the 4th from Eels, and they're going from strength to strength. While the themes of alienation and freakery remain pretty much the same, this album sees Eels take on a harder edge. The wierdness is still there, but in places, this album really rocks. The band consists of E on vocals and numerous instruments, Butch on drums, John Parish on guitars and keyboards, and Kool G Murder on bass. And it's primarily John Parish, who co-wrote most of the songs, who is responsible for the harder sound. But fear not - it may be a harder sound, but it's still recognisably an Eels sound, and wonderful for it. We're talking evolution, not ...

Souljacker - Eels
by weezer170 - written on 06/10/01 (Useful, 90 readings)
Rating:
familiar with the Eels last two albums will be quite shocked, they haven't used this many guitars since their '96 debut `Beautiful Freak'. Opener `Dog Faced Boy' is a rather excellent rocker which also features the great couplet `ma won't shave me, Jesus can't save me'. The pace continues until we ...

Electro-shock Blues - Eels
by indiecater - written on 01/02/01 (Very useful, 193 readings)
Rating:
about lead singer 'E' begin to make sense. Choosing subject material that any sane songwriter would avoid is certainly not in 'E's script. And they call Radiohead depressing, next to Eels indie's great hope sound like Steps. Eltro-Shock Blues is an intimate record but singularly lacks the comfort that intimacy provides. It's bile is somehow harnessed by a low-key approach but even then the sentiments often find their target. It is similar to smiling and speaking in tones that don't portray the anger that the words contain. At times legendary miserablist 'E' lapses into overdrive. Who else could come up with song depressing ...

Wake Up And Smell The Carcass - Carcass
Comprehensive collection of rare material.
Peel Sessions are missing, and most of the songs were B-sides for a reason.
To Mega Therion - Celtic Frost
Extreme thrash classic with unbeatable atmosphere.
Still rooted in the thrash tradition, which may disappoint.
Through Chasm Caves And Titan Woods - Carpathian Forest
Great start that hints at what might have been.
More traditionally-minded songs still sound weak by comparison.
Swansong - Carcass
Easily approachable death-'n'-roll.
Will likely disappoint fans of the band's previous styles; their weakest album overall.
Solar Lovers - Celestial Season
Some beautiful, classically-influenced doom metal.
Stoner rock prominence weakens the effect.
Reign Of Elements - Celesty
Average power metal.
Average power metal.
Mortal Mind Creation - Celesty
Progressive touches now work.
Still indebted to the power metal tradition.
Legacy Of Hate - Celesty
More ambitious.
Still uses other bands' ideas.
Choice Cuts - Carcass
Much of Carcass' finest material, plus previously unheard Peel Sessions.
The band's diverse styles aren't going to please all fans.
Black Shining Leather - Carpathian Forest
Audible bass makes an interesting change.
Confused and inconsistent on the one hand; repetitive on the other.
