Advantages: Very mixed styles on this album, great musicianship

Disadvantages: The vocals are not particularly great but are quite clean actually

Blood Mountain is an excellent album by Mastodon. The name Mastodon has been floating around in my circles for a long time but I've somehow managed to avoid them until now as far as I was aware. The album Blood Mountain is the band's 3rd and was released in September 2006. It's a concept album about climbing up a mountain and the different things that can happen to you when lost (according to the bassist Troy Sanders)

Personally I like it a lot, largely experimental it crosses plenty of genres, I'd like to describe it as hatebreed beating macabre up in a hippy community as it fuses metalcore and sludge metal with more psychedelic tunes and even a bit of stoner rock. It even gets jazzy at times, in fact it's so eclectic that you could listen to the same track over and over again and spot different things each time. It starts off with an overpowering catchy "The Wolf Is Loose" and then tries various music styles before going all out weird and let's have fun with a guitar on "Bladecatcher" before finishing off with some quieter tracks. The album is a bit of a journey and something definitely worth listening to.

1. "The Wolf Is Loose" - 3:34
2. "Crystal Skull" (featuring Scott Kelly) - 3:27
3. "Sleeping Giant" - 5:36
4. "Capillarian Crest" - 4:25
5. "Circle of Cysquatch" - 3:19
6. "Bladecatcher" - 3:20
7. "Colony of Birchmen" (featuring Joshua Homme) - 4:19
8. "Hunters of the Sky" - 3:52
9. "Hand of Stone" - 3:30
10. "This Mortal Soil" - 5:00
11. "Siberian Divide" (featuring Cedric Bixler-Zavala) - 5:32
12. "Pendulous Skin" (featuring Isaiah "Ikey" Owens) - 22:15 (song ends at 5:03)

Summary: Interesting album
