A different side of Michael Jackson. Where did the pop go? (Blood On The Dance Floor - Michael Jackson)

Advantages: Performance is more mature from Jackson. Disadvantages: Not a fan of remixes... Well. This was new. Michael Jackson's 'Blood On The Dance Floor' was released in 1997 and comprises of 5 new songs and a bunch of remixes of the songs from his previous album 'HIStory'. The opening track, the titular 'Blood On the Dance Floor' is a scorcher for sure although it's a departure from the usual Jackson track. An intense track it was Jackson's last Number One in the U.K. prior to his death. The second track 'Morphine' is another unusual track talking about Jackson's dependence on painkillers and the anger on the track is one that jars from his usual melodies. The third track, 'Superfly Sister' is also a catchy track and sounds deceptively light-hearted but the lyrics are explicit (for Jackson anyway). The fourth and fifth tracks 'Ghosts' and 'Is It Scary' merge into one but both are good tracks, once again addressing the invasion of privacy from the media and paranoia. Accompanied with the groundbreaking music video also named 'Ghosts' (the longest music video at 37 minutes along), it features a moonwalking skeleton amongst others. The remixes aren't particularly great with the exception of the final track, Tony Moran's remix of HIStory - both the original and the remix are great tracks. In summary, not the greatest album from Jackson but what can you expect from a remix album? When considered in that perspective, 2 millions copies isn't bad... Summary: Worth a listen but not sure whether it's worth a buy |
