Advantages: Every song is a standout - The Definitive Album of the Definitive Artist

Disadvantages: Not a long album - May be difficult to decide on a favourite track

In the 1960's Bob Dylan revolutionised music with his holy trinity of albums (Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all Back Home) and was begrudgingly forced into a position as a quasi spokesperson for his generation. Needless to say that Dylan, being Dylan, shunned his new position and, in the 1970s, went on to record the most personal album of his career and possibly of all time.

It is often customary with album reviews to identify stand out tracks and even to give the songs individual ratings out of ten, yet to do so to Blood on the Tracks would be to negate the wonderful natural quality that is consistent throughout. Dylan has since gone on to record a series of listenable, but not exceptional albums, yet Blood on the Tracks would be a worthy peak in the back catalogue of any artist. Anyone who is looking to listen to Dylan for the first time could do much worse than starting here, but be warned, after Blood on the Tracks it is only possible to go downhill.

Summary: No music library is complete without it
