Advantages: Great song writing, really funny album
Disadvantages: None although John D Loudermilk is more of a talker than a singer
From this album cover, John D Loudermilk clearly looks a bit of a geek - it looks like the kind of album you'd see advertised on the television, a country / love song artist perhaps, well in some cases his songs span both genres but John D Loudermilk is a great artist, a witty lyricist and a nifty guitar player - undoubtedly one of the best and underrated artists to work out of Nashville in the 60s and certainly one of the most influential.
Blue Train is in fact a compilation album that features some of John D Loudermilk's lesser known stuff, he's a great story teller with songs often being very funny and having a great twist in them. Admittedly there are better singers out there and that's perhaps why a lot of Loudermilk's songs only became hits when they were covered but his quirky country voice is something you get used to and start to like.
John D. Loudermilk's creativity is always entertaining, whether he's writing songs about losing his 'Darling Jane' in a hurricane, about bodybuilding in order to beat up the 'Bully of the Beach', unruly drivers in 'Road Hog' or criminals on the run in 'Big Daddy' but one of my favourite songs is 'All of This for Sally' in which an elderly rich man has left all his money and valuables to a 4 year old cocker spaniel whilst disguising that fact for the whole song. Genius!
This album is quite expensive at more than £13 but it's a great selection of songs and I can't say there's one that I don't like or even find weaker than the others, each one is an entertaining little tale in itself and with 26 tracks - it's still good value!
Summary: A clever album that most music lovers will appreciate
