A while ago now I read a crime thriller written by a guy called Martyn Waites entitled 'Bone Machine'. In it the guy listens to Tom Waits, and considering the title of the book (which is also the name of a Waits album), I thought I would give you a review of one of the man's many CDs. Released in 1978 'Blue Valentine' is typical Waits. If you've never heard the man picture yourself in a smoke-filled bar, drunk enough to talk to the chair beside you and suffering from a broken heart. Now imagine you could play the piano and had taken up singing after chewing a mouthful of broken glass. THAT'S what Tom Waits sounds like. He writes songs for the downtrodden ...
