Imagine the predicament. It's 1990. A decade largely bereft of taste has given way to another decade that will be similarly deficient. Your band and your songs have quietly (well, rather loudly at times, but hey ho) reinvented indie rock during two shatteringly good albums (but you don't really know it yet). But what you DO know is that all is not well with Boston's finest. For a start, you're not really a Boston band anymore, with a membership strewn across the States from sea to shining sea: hence you only really get together to record or tour...you ain't a gang like in the old days. Especially since, fed up with both her comparative ... Read the complete review

Bossanova is the third album from the Pixies. This album includes the classic song “Velouria”, which has been covered by Weezer, and was one of two singles from this record, along with “Dig For Fire”. The album sees Black Francis’ songwriting styles at their most chilled out. The lyrical content is somewhat varied, but includes Francis’ usual mix of UFOs, love songs, and angst. A particular highlight from this record is “Ana”, two minutes and nine relaxed seconds of pure Pixies genius. After having my life totally turned around by 'Surfer Rosa', and falling deeper under the Pixies' spell with 'Doolittle', 'Bossanova' came as something of a letdown. A band that had almost single handedly saved guitar rock from the clutches of the poodle metallers had started to falter. If 'Rosa was the most energetic of their albums, and Doolittle the most accomplished, Bossanova is the most laid-back. Wispy tracks like 'Havalina' and 'Velouria' (which made a half-hearted stab at the charts, in the wake of the success of 'Monkey Gone to Heaven') are poppy but uninspiring. The slower numbers -- 'Is she ... Read the complete review

This is in my opinion this is the best Pixies albums that they made. It isn't as heavy as Trompe Le Monde, so it apeals to a wide varity of people. This album contains some of the Pixies greatest songs: Rock Music, Velouria, Allison, Is She Weird and Dig For Fire. This album sums up the Pixies in one go. It has a good mix of raw music and good production. It takes a while for a listener to get used to Black Francis wierd vocal talents, but they match very well with the harmonics of basist Kim Deal. ... Read the complete review
