Break the Spell is the 3rd studio album from american alt rock band Daughtry. Daughtry were formed and are fronted by Chris Daughtry. Chris Daughtry was a contestant on season 5 of American Idol, and finished in 4th place. First album Daughtry and second album Leave this Town are two of my favourite albums and when I heard the 3rd album was released I couldn't wait to hear it. Chris Daughtry is a singer-songwriter and has collaborated with some big names in the same genre, including Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger. All lyrics on this album were written by Daughtry. It has been said that this album is more upbeat and more positive lyrically than the previous two. However it didn't really make much of an impact on the uk market as it only entered the Uk album chart at 67. The album is a bit different to the 2 previous albums, but don't let this put you off.
On this deluxe edition of the album, there are 16 tracks. Track listing is as follows,
2. Crawling Back to You
3. Outta My Head
4. Start of Something Good
6. Break the Spell
7.We're Not Gonna Fall
8. Gone too Soon
9. Losing My Mind
10. Rescue Me
11. Louder Than Ever
13. Who's They
14. Maybe We're Already Gone
15. Everything But Me
Renegade - was the 1st single release from the album, and is a bit heavier than the majority of the other tracks on the album. I feel the intro is a little weak but by the chorus its pretty catchy and you can really get into it. There is some impressive guitar and drums in this track. The lyrics are original and memorable, it doesn't take long to start singing along. I do feel however there are stronger tracks on the album that could have been used as the albums first single release and as an opening track.
Crawling Back To You- This was the second single release from the album, to me a much stronger track than the previous. This is one of my stand out tracks. It isn't as heavy as the previous track but still a good rock track. Lyrically it is both original and memorable. A song about admitting you were wrong and crawling back to that special someone. As the track isn't as heavy you can really hear the high quality of vocals.
Outta My Head-This is one of my favourite tracks on the album. Unique beat to it that you can't help but get into. This was the 1st track that I played over again, the lyrics are catchy and memorable. Love the lyrics and Chris's vocal range on this track. Relatable lyrics, we're all had that someone we can't get out our heads. I think this would be a good choice for a single release.
Start Of Something Good- this is a slower rock track, a love song. The lyrics are beautiful and relatable.
Crazy- Another slower rock track, but a bit faster than the previous track. The lyrics are unique and there is a good rhythm throughout. The best think about this track for me is actually the guitar playing. Don't get me wrong it is a good track I just don't feel it stands out as much as others on the album, but the guitar playing on this track is worth a mention.
Break the Spell- Album title track.A bit more upbeat than the two previous tracks. It has catchy lyrics that are original and memorable.
We're Not Gonna Fall- Another more up-beat track, yet not heavy. Positive lyrics, that are almost empowering. Makes you want to stand strong and not let things get you done. The vocals on this track are really powerful.
Gone Too Soon- A slower track. Lyrically beautiful yet so sad. They are original and memorable. It has been guilty of making me shed a tear or two. It gives me goosebumps. There will be people who can really relate. This is one of my favourite tracks on the album. This track shows a different softer side to the band.
Losing My Mind- Another one of my stand out tracks on the album. This is one of the tracks I always skip ahead to. The vocal range from Chris on this track is amazing.
Rescue Me- This is my least favourite track on the album. Its just not rock enough for me, even compared to there slower tracks. Even the lyrics aren't as impressive as others on the album. However there are some really good vocals from Chris, but to be honest I usually skip this track.
Louder Than Ever- All my faith is restored now. This is one of my stand out tracks on the album. Love it! The track is much more upbeat and you can really get into it. Unforgettable lyrics that have a positive meaning to them.
Spaceship- Not as stand out for me, still a good track, just for me its not as good as the majority of the others on the album. Lyrically its not as strong.
Who's They- A slower rock track. Lyrically it has great depth and meaning yet it still doesn't grab me.
Maybe We're Already Gone- This one is a bit more of a rock song, yet lyrically not as memorable as others. Vocals however are still of a really high standard.
Everything but me- Another slower rock track. I enjoyed this track, it has beautiful lyrics and a fantastic melody throughout, however not a stand out track for me.
Lullaby- A much slower track, with beautiful lyrics. The track is almost accoustic, and really shows of Chris' vocal ability. I think this song is for his kids. It is relatable especially if you are a parent. It is a nice end to the album.
Overall a good album. The stand out tracks for me are, Louder Than Ever, Crawling Back to You, Outta My Head and Losing My Mind. All tracks have amazing lyrics, some better than others but generally amazing. Chris's vocals are outstanding throughout. Although I feel the first half of the album is stronger. I feel there are stronger tracks than Renegade and perhaps if one of those was released as a single it may have helped with the albums performance. It's not the strongest Daughtry album, but I do feel it deserved to do much better in the UK than it did. I'm sure as a band they will continue to be successful, especially in the states. I'm looking forward to seeing what they release in the future. Well worth a listen.
