Kelly Clarkson was the first winner of American Idol and released her debut album Thankful in 2003 to a great reception in the pop world. With Breakaway her second effort she wanted to develop her sound to make a more varied album which was more focused on the songwriting.

I saw Kelly Clarkson live in Hammersmith last month and on my return I ordered this album online as it was the one of her three album releases that I didnt have.

...The Album...

1. Breakaway

This was co-written with Avril Lavigne and is a nice way to open the album and is a track about growing up in a small town and wanting to find something new elsewhere. It isnt a downbeat track but more of bettering yourself by going somewhere else and broadening your horizons.

2. Since U Been Gone

This is a great track to sing along to as it has a great chorus. the guitar and drum intro works well and then the song moves swiftly on to the great chorus. This track is a middle finger up to an ex saying that you are moving on with your life without them.

3. Behind These Hazel Eyes

This is a fine pop rock ballad, Kelly's voice sounds as great with the tender moments as it does with the great chorus. The music flows very well on this track and keeps Kellys voice and the vocals as the main features of the song.

4. Because Of You

When I first heard this song as a single I fell in love with it instantly and it is one of my favourite songs of the last few years. A beautiful piano led ballad which she wrote when she was sixteen years old. I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake
A smile, a laugh everyday of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

5. Gone

This is a funky pop rock track which isnt one of the best tracks on the album but has a catchy melody and the music is great to dance to. probably the quickest hardest music on the album. Kelly's voice sounds great yet again.

6. Addicted

This is a soft ballad about being addicted to someone however they treat you. A powerful and emotive ballad. This opens with a taut beat from the drum and the track develops into a rocky chorus and Kelly's voice sounds so emotive.

7. Where Is Your Heart

This is a fantastic ballad which starts with a simple but beautiful piano and then Kelly's voice comes in. This song is questioning someone to prove they love you when you arent seeing them showing your they love you. Kelly sounds superb.

8. Walk Away

A great rockier ballad with a very catchy chorus, An intro with biting guitars then a shuffling drum beat with keyboard hooks. I love the way the drums pound in This song, A great track which is telling someone to just walk away as they are just not what you thought.

9. You Found Me

This is an interesting track as it has a dance beat but with soft guitars, It works very well and once the drums start it is a very nice song which is one of the lesser known tracks on this album but it's a very good one all the same.

10. I Hate Myself For Losing You

This is a great track which starts with a drum beat and some high guitar licks. This has a very catchy chorus that went down a storm when I saw her live in Hammersmith in March. One of the best rockier tracks she has done.

11. Hear Me

A great piano melody which sounds a little like it was done by Evanescense. A stop start rock melody develops and this song is a lovely ballad that is one of the best on the album and shows her voice off superbly well.

12. Beautiful Disaster (Live)

This is a live version of her track Beautiful disaster. I love this track and she did an amazing performance of this brilliant track when I saw her in Hammersmith. The chorus is such a brilliant chorus and this version will bring tears to your eyes. Just a piano and her voice.

Bonus Tracks

13. Miss Independent

This is a track that was on her debut album and for some reason it has been included as a bonus track on this album. A rolling drum beat and funky guitar licks and keyboard loops create a great melody which makes this track a great one to dance to.

14. Low

Another track which was on her debut album Thankful. A soft ballad which has a nice feel to it in the opening moments and then develops into a nice ballad about feeling low due to a friend letting you down by not telling you something. Kelly's voice sounds great again.

...Overall...

This is a very very good album indeed and shows the growth Kelly has experienced since her debut in 2003. This album's best moments are led of course by the outstanding ballads "Because of you" and Beautiful disaster but there are many great moments on this album that demonstrate her overall talent which shows she can record just about any genre.

Her third album My December develops the rock theme but there are still some great ballads like the ones featured on Breakaway. An immense talent who will be around for many years to come. I can't wait for her next album which will be her fourth. And she was only 26 on Thursday.
