Advantages: Some great stand out tracks. Strong, consistant vocals

Disadvantages: A lot of filler, uninspiring in places

I remember discovering Lucie Silvas very well. It was back in 2004 when the video to her debut single 'What You're Made Of' caught my eye. Instantly drawing comparisions to Delta Goodrem [who I am a huge fan of], due to the piano led melodies of her songs and her squeaky clean image, she seemed like a new musical obsession just waiting to be snatched up by me.
'Breathe In' was her breakthrough record selling over 300,000 copies in the UK despite peaking no higher than no11. Whilst her career seems to have hit a tumbleweed fueled desert since the release of this record, 'Breathe In' remains a classic full of easy to listen to ballads that all plod along quite nicely but with a few exceptions fail to leave much of an inprint on the imagination.

Opening track 'Don't Look Back' immediately sets the tone of the record. Lucie is lyrically very talented and uses her voice to great effect on the majority of tracks here, however on songs such as 'Don't Look Back', an attempt to make her seem more uptempo and fresh doesn't really work as it doesnb't suit her voice or her choice of instruments.
The next two tracks are pleasant enough to listen but do little to break out of the mould the opener has forged. 'Last Man Standing' has a gorgeous chorus that ripples with dark undertones and is about as near to matching Delta Goodrem's vocals as anything else on this CD.
'Forget Me Not' is a slow and rather frustrating ballad as it lacks anything musical to grab hold of. Lucie's lyrics again are faultless but the track is just lacking that something to bring a spark to your ears.

The title track 'Breathe In' finally manages to bring some uptempo, happy, catchy pop to the mix. You find yourself lost in the polished vocals and the bouncy feel of the melody. It is easily the best track on the album with 'Nothing Else Matters' a close second. And no it's not a song with the same name as the Metallica classic IT IS the Metallica classic. Shockingly Lucie pulls it off stripping the song right down to its roots and laying on an eerie and haunting melody that only furthers the amazing aftertaste left by this song. It's a brave challenge to undertake but she rises to it perfectly.
Sadly once the very Delta Goodrem esque lead single 'What You're Made Of' has passed the album resorts to the trap hole that many records do and clogs itself up with bland, uninspiring filler tracks.
'Twisting The Chain' provides a strong, catchy chorus that will have you singing along to it but the final four tracks just seem to plod on forever and though the talent is pretty evident, if you're a music fan that places little emphasis on lyrics and arrangement this record is probably not for you.

All in all the record iss strong in places but is let down by a bigger number of weak or average songs compared to those gems. I'd reccomend if anything just downloading 'Breathe In', 'Last Man Standing', 'Don't Look Back', 'What You're Made Of' and the Metallica cover.
