Advantages: very easy listening
Disadvantages: none
The first time I ever heard of Kenny G was on the Steve Wright show.He was doing a review of the Breathless album and played a few tracks for the listeners to hear for themselves. At the time I thought mmm very nice but nothing spectacular. Coincidently, A few days later my sister came round to visit. She had been to see Michael Bolton and Kenny G was also on the bill. Well she was absolutely raving about Mr G more so than Michael Bolton himself who she had originally gone to see in the first place! Clutched in her hot little hand was a tape called Breathless,so just to indulge her a little I put it on. Straightaway she drifted off into a dreamlike state obviously re-living the concert of the previous evening -or so I thought. By the time track 2(Forever In Love)had finished I was in a similar trance, it is just so beautiful, uplifting relaxing and emotional. I liked it so much that I rushed off and bought myself a copy the very next day! It's extremely difficult to describe a complete album that is in the main instrumental.Just two tracks include vocals, neither of which are sung by Kenny himself. Peabo Bryson sings 'By The Time This Night Is Over' and 'Even If My Heart Would Break' is sung by Aaron Neville. While these two songs are both very nice I would have preferred to have had more from just the man himself, mainly because they seem to interrupt the mood a little, almost snapping you out of your dreamy existance. Kenny put two years into making this album and dedicates most of it to his mother Evelyn, in particular the song 'A Year Ago'which was written a year after she passed away. The only other song dedicated is 'Forever In Love'(for his wife Doll) Kenny leaves a brief message of thanks to his fans on the tape insert, followed by a list of all the songs and credits for everyone who plays on them.On the back of this he goes on to thank (it seems) everyone he knows in true America
n Kiss A** style,a bit sickly and name droppy but don't let that put you off listening to the music! So back to the music itself. For anyone who doesn't know, Kenny G 's main musical instrument is the saxophone, but he plays it very softly giving great depth and emotion to all the tracks, but it is not the only instrument used, there's guitar, keyboards and percussion as well. My favourite track on the album is one I've already mentioned twice, called 'Forever In Love' I just get totally lost in it. This is a great album to listen to when you're in the bath (with a huge glass of wine),maybe good background music for a romantic dinner,if you're having trouble sleeping or if you just want to tune out and relax in general. By the way the price I'm quoting is for a cassette and bear in mind that I bought it nine years ago!
