Advantages: songs well suited to film
Disadvantages: little long
This Bridget Jones CD to accompany the film reflects the mood and feelings of the film perfectly and is an essential purchase for those who have devoured the book or watched the film and identified with Bridget. From the opening recent hit by Gabrielle, ‘Out of Reach’, the album covers old favourites such as Andy Williams’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ (which usually tends to be a returning home from the pub song for me!) and Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’, to new gems such as one of the two offerings from Robbie Williams ‘Not of This Earth’. There are also the reworkings of old ‘classics’ such as Geri’s recent number one cover of ‘It’s Raining Men’ (although in my opinion, the original Weathergirls version is much better) and ‘All By Myself’, for those moments when you are feeling depressed and just want to wallow in self-pity with a glass of Chardonay! However, the length of this album, although with nineteen tracks it is good value for money, would perhaps have benefited from a bit of tactful omission of some tracks. Some, such as the Artful Dodger’s ‘Woman trouble’ do not seem to fit in with the overall theme of ‘girl’ or indeed ‘woman’ power and towards the end of the CD, some of the songs tend to become a little ‘samey’. On the plus side however, most of the songs included evoke moments of certain scenes from the film (for example, ‘It’s Raining Men’ is played to accompany the comical fight scene between Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver) and a reference is made to the Chaka Khan song with Brtidget claiming at one particular emotive moment, "I choose Vodka. And Chaka Khan!" All in all, if you enjoyed the film and felt you could relate to it in any way, you probably will enjoy this CD as it takes you on a journey from wallowing in misery, feelin
g sorry for yourself songs, to all singing, all dancing, power women songs, especially good before a girl’s night out! This is a must for any budding Bridget!

- 10/06/01 Good stuff - although I would have rather they had the originals of the songs, and not dire covers! And whatever happened to the track from the film 'Me And Mrs Jones' by Billy Paul - I thought that would have surely got onto the CD! Ah well, great op! |

- 10/06/01 Actually could've been plenty more information, but still a good op. Shame the CD's not that good! (I'm all for girl power, just not cr*p pop...) Ben |
