Advantages: Every instrument is obviously played with joy and expertise.

Disadvantages: The latin sounds will sound alien to many in the UK

This album opened the world up to a completely new type of music, Cuban. The music and stars of the Buena Vista Social Club are actually very old, but Ry Cooder (and American musician) gathered the artists together for this first album.

The music is very easy listening latin, everyone seems to like it even on the first listen, which is unusual because latin music is not popular in Europe. There are various latin styles, but it is easiest to just explain it as slow, lazy latino.

The artists have all become massive stars and so Ry Cooder got them to release their own albums after this. However this first collection of songs in the benchmark. All of the songs have their own charms, the instruments sound beautiful, and new precussion techniques give the music a nice earthy bass feel.

The band are now touring, I wish I could attend as they surely won't be doing many more shows because of the advancing age of the band members. I have almost forced people i know to go as I know it will be show to remember. This is a classic CD, and the DVD is also worth owning.

Summary: A fantastic album that all music lovers should own
