Advantages: Some r and b tracks instead of usual pop
Disadvantages: Loads of ballads
This album marks the change in Mariah's style. On "Butterfly", she dumps her previous pop numbers for more sophisticated tracks (many produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs). And, obviously there are a few of her trademark ballads thrown in, too. To start with, Carey uses one of the strongest and clearly best tracks "Honey". Just as "Fantasy" "Emotions" and "Dreamlover" had done before, "Honey" easily reached number 1 in the US and number 3 here in the UK. Although the track depends heavily on the use of samples, Carey and Puffy proove they can work very well together on this groovy number! "Butterfly" is one of Mariah's strongest ballds yet. Despite the pretty pathetic lyrics, the song has some key features, including a lovely piano intro and a well built up chorus. "My All" is another ballad, which is more catchy but not really stronger than "Butterfly". The song stays reasonably slow, but will keep Carey fans happy. Quite original, which is new for Mariah. "The Roof" is a magnificent blend of r and b and hip hop. Mariah sounds a little drowsy, but the incredible melody covers up for this. "Fourth Of July" is a solid and sweet track, but totally un-original! It sounds exactly the same as "Underneath The Stars" from her "Daydream" album. Not a ballad, but still slow. "Breakdown" (appropriate title if released on "Glitter") is a real r and b track. There are some strange noises surrounding Mariah's whispering vocals, such as birds cherping etc.. Near the end, the rap group Bone Thugs 'N Harmony appear briefly to spice the track up slightly. "Babydoll", which is produced by hip hop legend Missy Elliott is once again slow but very smooth and relaxed. The lyrics sound a bit like Aqua's "Barbie Girl" though!
r>"Close My Eyes" is strong on everything. The lyrics are fabulously written by Mariah, and sound very truthful to her actual expierences . Not half as sweet as past ballads, a perfect slow song, sung beautifully by Mariah. "Whenever You Call" starts off similar to "Buttefly". Although it is a spine tingler, it sounds very much like all of Mariah's other ballads ("Hero" in particular) "Fly Away" should of been called "Butterfly remix". It uses the exact same words, just jazzed up in a better way. "Beautiful Ones" is a cover version of the Prince classic, and Mariah and Sisqo (who was unknown when this was released) manage to sing it very well. They easily improve it and Mariah sounds incredible next to Sisqo. "Outside" is a proper sugar coated ballad which wraps up the album nicely. The lyrics seem to be sung a bit messy, but it's surrounded with a fantastic melody. (Some CD's also get two remixes of "Honey". These are ok, but I tend to skip them because Da brat and JD (who feature on them) are really annoying.
