Amorica - Black Crowes
by Mr Chubbers - written on 05/02/06 (Useful, 174 readings)
Rating:
Sorry dooyoo but this was released in 1994. Anyway, it s the third album from Atlanta southern-fried rockers The Black Crowes and whilst not quite as good as their previous release The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion (the greatest album ever made in my opinion) it s still very very good indeed. Whilst that earlier album was all Allman Brothers style boogie and blues here the Crowes, with the magnificent white blues singer Chris Robinson and guitarist bro Rich, lay down a vary of styles from funk (P25 London), down-home acoustic strumming (Downtown Money Waster), flower power hippy stuff (She Gave Good Sunflower) and also more straightforward heavy rock ...

Southern Harmony And Musical Companion - The Black Crowes

I bought this album when I was 13 and have listened to it constantly throughout my life. Its definitely on my desert island disks and totally stands The test of time in terms of playability. I have often tried to decide which one of their albums I like the best and although for me it s always a toss up between this and Shake Your Money Maker, this one always wins. I think the main difference is that they got Marc Ford (fantastic new guitarist) and organist as additions to the band. This seems to fatten out the sound brilliantly. There are some amazing gospel choir sounding backing vocals to many of the songs that tie the theme of the album tightly to its title Southern ...

Southern Harmony And Musical Companion - The Black Crowes

Welcome to the good times! The Black Crowes seemed to have lost the plot a little with "Amorica", their third album, but they staunchly hung on to it with both hands for this fantastic second record, released before the decline. Essentially a refinement of the rock/country drawl-with-guitars-in-it which characterised "Shake Your Money Maker", I would argue that "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" will be in your stereo longer than it takes to write that immense title 1000 times. And what a title it is. Few albums are so brilliantly summed up. It just sounds Southern and drawn out. The Black Crowes great hymn to the Good Old Boys, ...
