Cage was called, by one of his contemporaries, 'an inventor of genius, but not a composer,' which is how most musicians tend to think of him; mainly because it is more convenient than facing up to some of the questions he posed. At the heart of Cage's philosophy was the idea that all sound is music. Not only that, but that Western art music is actually obscuring the beauty of sound itself - more and more so in Cage's time as the tendency towards greater and greater complexity took hold.
