Advantages: Best of both worlds!
Disadvantages: NONE
Red hot chili peppers have had many albums over the years. I believe that through time as the members have matured so has the music. This album lies at a crossroad between the crazy, funky, heavy chili's and the more melody drivin and slightly more layed back chili's. In essence you have something for everyone here.I will take you a few of the more memorable songs on the album and tell you why every music lover should own this!
Im going to start with "around the world". Here we have a more traditionally chili's song. If you can learn the worlds its one to sing along to and the bass line to start it all is simply orgasmic! You do encounter some of the silly side of the chili's.Not silly in a bad way but in a way that shows these guys still have fun when they write music together. An example of this is the inclusion of crazy sounds rather than lyrics. It all works however!
Next up is the title track "Californication". This is a song you are bound to have heard. Its one of their more famous. The guitar is the dominant instrument i feel but its a solid song. The lyrics are beautiful and rather meaningful, not something you allways connect with the chili's! This is a song that shows the change in the sound of the chili's. Im not saying they havnt had slower songs beofre, just look at under the bridge. Im simply saying the greater proportion of songs seemed to sway towards a softer style. Tracks like otherside, scar tissue and road trippin also show this!
"easily", my favourite song on the album. Its funky and really uplifting! The end solo is a calaboration of itleast 3 guitars! I love the lyrics and the overall melody of the vocals. Songs like "i like dirt" and "right on time" are in a similar style to easily.
As you can see you do get a good mix. Some are powerful and funky. Some are stunningly beautifully written.
Im afraig I cannot write this review without mentioning Chad Smith. As a drummer I am rather fond of him and the style he plays in. Its allways funky. He keeps it simple when its called for and can rock out whenever he feels like it. He is a powerhouse. I suggest this album for drummers especially. Perhaps if I were a guiatr player I would go on about John. I do believe people from al waves of music would enjoy this album and you should give it a go!
Summary: A great chili's album
