Terry Wogan should rebel against Radio 2?s play list more often as he has discovered a brilliant new young talent to rival one of my favourite female singers Norah Jones. When the king of Eurovision and waffling on in a good way at breakfast me played Closest Thing to Crazy by Katie Melua I sat up and took note. I loved the song and also her voice who I actually initially mistook for Cerys Matthews (the wailing welsh bird that used to be in Catatonia) in one of her mellower prettier songs. However on listening to the album ?Call off the Search? that I bought a few weeks ago comparisons should be made with the aforementioned Norah Jones. Like Ms Jones she is young being ... I bought this album as I really liked Katie Melua's voice in general. This is a decent enough album but I can't say that I like every track. For this review, I am going to highlight my favourite tracks as for me, these are the best ones and the rest are ones that I tend to skip if I am being entirely honest. ***The Closest Thing To Crazy*** This was probably Katie's best known hit and the song that introduced me to her. It is a soft and slow track that is quite haunting in terms of vocals. It is arguably Katie's most commercial track, which probably contributed to its success. For me, this is the best song on the album, although there are some others ... Read the complete review

Born Ketevan Melua in Georgia (The country, not the U.S. state) in 1984, "Katie" moved to Northern Ireland at 8 and then on to England at 14. She is a jazz come blues come crooner type singer and her voice bares a remarkable resemblence to that of Cerys Matthews (Catatonia). Whether this is deliberate or coincidence I don't know. This album hit Number 1 in the U.K. charts. Its sales were clearly as a direct result of the quite brilliant hit single that she had with "The Closest Thing To Crazy" which was written , as are 5 of the other tracks, by Mike Batt (of Wombles music fame). Mike Batt also arranged and produced the whole ... Read the complete review

I bought this album when it first came out and Katie Melua was riding high off the success of her 'Closest Thing To Crazy' single, which had been lurking in the charts for weeks on end. Who: UK singer/songwriter Katie Melua, a voice which could melt chocolate, a pretty face and ability to play guitar and deliver moving light melodic love songs. On this album: 'Closest Thing To Crazy' is a cheesy yet enjoyable ode to being in love and being caught up in the moment of it all. 'Crawling Up A Hill' has a slightly grittier feel, though retains her soft vocal throughout. One of the best songs is 'Blame It On The Moon' which is soothing and ... Read the complete review
