Genesis without Phil Collins? To the casual everyman listening to frothy radio hits, such a construct is inconceivable. However, if one was to examine the history of this band, Tony Banks (keyboards) and Mike Rutherford (guitars and basses) have been the primary writers throughout. When Collins packed up his drums in 1996, Banks and Rutherford did what they did back in 1967 when they first got together--they wrote songs. And the songs that came out of these sessions convinced Banks and Rutherford to continue onward. In 1974 Peter Gabriel left Genesis,but much too the surprise of the music press,the band continued when Phil Collins came out from behind the drum kit and proved just how vital he was to the group.Genesis went from being a cult favourite to a huge music machine. History however,doesnt always repeat itself. Phil is now gone,and Genesis did what Genesis did before,they cant dance but they can carry on.In came Ray Wilson,a young Scottish singer who sounds more American in his vocal deliverary than a lot of American singers........ The result is very much a hit and miss album, it contains tracks that ache for Phil Collins ...
