Candyfloss and medicine

Wow, a site which actually has Eddie reader on it. I am in shock, yet I am really happy to see this. My heroine, my star, my music that gets me through the toughest times in life. I wanted to go and see her in concert once, but because I was young, I was given to my Gran for the evening while my mum and dad went to see her. There has been times in which she has performed in trowbridge, but the problem is, is I always find out about it in the next weeks papers which is a shame. I have every album that she has ever written, or made and I love every single one of them. There are two albums that stick out above the rest to me, and that is candyfloss and medicine, and my favourite, Eddie reader. I will write about candyfloss and medicine to start off with though, as this is what I have been listening to most often recently. I remember listening to this album on the car down to Cornwall in our holidays, and my sister as always being sick right outside the same house every year. On the same album every year. Sick on the same music album every year. I don’t know what it was with her, but for some reason, it was like a mantra that she had to perform.

1) Glasgow star

This song is an upbeat funky song, and has a little bit of swearing in it. This one of the only songs of hers that I know that has swearing in it. This I would say is a random song as it is about being stuck in a place for days on end, maybe even longer periods of time, and she goes through different random scenarios, like some guy named Brian having a thing for the conductress, or surfing on a tiny wave….this song is a great song if you are in a happy mood, but otherwise it’s a little brainwork to try and find out what she’s actually trying to say.

‘I’m here for days like these
There was me imagining
Smoke and black sugar breeze
I’m here for days like these
And as far as I can see
I was here for days like these’

2) Town without pity

This one is a little weird as well. It has a sort of sexy feel to the music of it. I don’t understand this song that much either, I get a kind of feeling that it is about love being one of the worst feelings in the world or something. I think it’s trying to say that people can tear your love apart if you let them

‘What a town without pity can do,
When we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how mad we are…
How can we keep love alive?
How can anything survive?
When these little minds tear you in two’

3) Medicine

This song has a nice feel to it. It’s comparing love to medicine. Can anything cure a broken heart, or is there anyway to survive an argument type thing. They go back in time and wonder if the love in that relationship was ever real, and if there is any sort of medicine to help it along better, and to heal wounds upon the heart.

‘Every body needs some kind of medicine sometimes
How long did you think it would last for you?
Sleeping pills and nothing else…
Climbing walls and giving names to the stars was that ever us

3) Rebel Angel

This has an upbeat funky tune to it and reminds me of feel good times. It has a ‘I am stronger than all of you think I am, so you try putting me down once more, I will get right back up and fight you all to the death’ kind of lyrics.

‘In my mind, it’s the highest place I’ve ever been without a parachute
I never lay down
Before anyone ever came down and crushed me
And I’m feeling crucified
With my rebel angel’

4) Semi precious

This song has a sad background to it. It’s about losing someone, yet loving them so much you would do anything for them. I’m not necessarily saying that they have run away, but have died, or been taken away. And who ever it is that loves them so much would do anything to find them again.

‘Why do the ones who love the most
Lose the most
Lose the most
Oh my darling
Is this the worst part?
Where the dream ends
And the day won’t start’

6) Lazy heart

This is about having a heart, that isn’t all good. It can’t be bothered to love anyone, or anything good. It’s also about a guy loving her so much that he would do anything for her. This is obviously a good guy, but yet she goes for the bad boys, and she tries her hardest to love him, because she doesn’t want to be hurt herself, but her heart just won’t love this guy that she wants to love.

‘I’ve got a lazy heart,
Can’t make it do a thing
Won’t go to church on Sundays,
I’ve never heard it sing,
No matter what I do,
Can’t make my heart love you’

7) I loved a lad

This has a weird tune to it. I can’t really explain it as such. It’s about loving someone, yet now they are with/married to someone else, and yet not feeling anything but past memories for them.

‘I loved a lad
And I loved him so well
But I hated all others
That spoke others out
But now he’s rewarded
For my love
Now he’s gone to another’

8) Butterfly jar
This has an Egyptian background feel to it. It’s pretty cool actually. It’s about someone keeping someone locked away so that they can’t escape, just to keep them safe and sound, to keep your insecurities from getting out. But the song is saying that you can’t keep someone under lock and key forever, because life does go on.

‘Prettiest thing you ever saw
Looking near and far
But he didn’t want the world to share,
So he kept her in a butterfly jar…
Life goes on,
Around you every where
It’s buzzing everywhere
No matter where you are
You’ll never stop the spark from the life into a heart’

9) Candyfloss

This is about something like being stuck in a place that you don’t want to be for a long time. Like you’re trapped, but it’s your own doing, yet there isn’t a way of getting out. As far as I know, Eddie had a violent husband, before she finally got out, and so I think this one is based on that. Being stuck in a relationship, but not having the strength to get out of it.

‘Candyfloss, between ears,
I’ve been getting this way for years
Now I’m so dumb
If I walk gold
It’s a miracle
It’s a miracle
Get me out of here,
Coz I know that if I stay, that I will melt away
Like candyfloss’

10) DarkHouse

This has got to be the best track on the whole album. I love this one to pieces, and it gets me through a lot of times. When I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m in a weird mood, anything. It has such a good feel to it. It’s about being left by a guy, and looking back on it. It shows how heartbreak can affect you, especially when your dreams and ambitions get in the way, yet how you can look back on it think ‘I will be stronger and I will move on.’ It’s a fantastic song and I adore it.

‘Moon flies past the DarkHouse
Shines a light out
She’s in a corner, corner
And the dust fills everything
She thought she needed saving
By the prince of hopelessness
She dreams of Barbie dolls and lemonade,
But she’s nowhere near it….
Car flies past the DarkHouse
Throws a light out
From here she sees a corner
Where he left her crying
She thought she needed saving
By the prince of hopelessness
He dreams of Barbie dolls and lemonade
But she was nowhere near it.’

This album is around good music shops, online places like e-bay and Amazon for prices between £7-12. I highly recommend this, as it has all the depressive songs, all the songs to sing at karaoke when you are drunk, all the songs to make you feel sad, yet happier when you are feeling down, and I thoroughly enjoy her music. She is a totally rocking woman, and I highly respect her for that. She is my hero; her songs touch my heart so much. I have to admit, that this isn’t my favourite album, but it has my favourite song on it, and that’s DarkHouse.

Thanks for reading

Summary: Eddie reader is my number one hero. I really recommend her music
