They were big in Japan and at home in Ireland but apart from one incendiary Top of the Pops performance for 'Where's Me Jumper' they did precious little business elsewhere. So it surprised nobody when the Sultans Of Ping F.C. hung up their boots for the last time a few years ago. 'Casual Sex In The Cineplex' is not a masterpiece but there are plenty hints of greatness running right through the album. Made up of 4 football crazy lads from Cork (hence the F.C. in their name and the north of England accents!) the Sultans achieved more notoriety through their antics than their music. "My brother knows Karl Marx" I mean what an introduction to a song, which is about someone losing there jumper at a disco, or is it?. You could debate it for hours. Alternatively you could bop about screaming your head off. I remember seeing them live, and that is where they were best, it just doesn't seem the same on the album. I mean there are some good songs like Veronica and Where's my Jumper, and then there are some rather grotty ones about football, and some very original ones, that are emmm yes well, after listening to the album a long time I am still not quite sure what they are. Loud, shouty, laddy, but somehow likeable, if this album could be distilled you'd be left with something that sounds very much like a drunken bloke watching Match of the Day and pining for a lost love. Or something. The opening track Back in a Tracksuit (Sample lyric: 'Jesus back on the street again, back in a tracksuit') simply has to be about David Icke, which is always a bonus. Stupid Kid is the song of someone frustrated by arty, pretentious types. Let's go Shopping sounds like Rolf Harris singing an ode to buying eggs and jam. It's great!
