As a huge fan of the Sugababes, I was looking forward to this album greatly. 2007's 'Change' was decent, great in parts, but suffered too much filler. Released in October 08, 'Catfights and Spotlights' was recorded in just one month; surely not a good sign? Would the filler take over? Let's see... 'Girls' kicks things off. The track wastes no time in introducing the audience to the group's new sound, free of electronic pop and influenced by the motown of the mid-twentieth century. The song suffers a chorus which divides opinion entirely; some detest the repetition of the "Here come the girls" hook, based around Ernie K Doe's classic, whilst others ... Read the complete review

I am a massive fan of the Sugababes, well not to the point where I follow their every move (although surely that is stalking, but that's a whole other issue ha-ha) but I do love their music. They never fail to impress me with their vocals and the style of their tunes. I don't think they have ever put a foot wrong for me, and this album is no exception. Here I shall give you a run down of each track on the album along with my overall view of it and hopefully you'll enjoy reading what I have to write. It's my first ever album review so I have my fingers crossed that you'll enjoy it, or at least I will have them crossed when I've finished typing it ... Read the complete review

What must Mutya Buena be thinking to herself right about now? Just over three years have passed since she left the Sugababes. Since then, the group have scored three Top 10 selling albums in the UK, although she did appear on the first of these, the Greatest Hits collection. By contrast, Buena herself has achieved little and has had to resort to going on Celebrity Big Brother to get publicity. I wasn't terribly impressed by the Sugababes most recent studio release, 2007's "Change", but when I heard that they planned to go for a more retro sound on their new album, I was immediately interested. There were rumours of a more old-school r 'n' b sound ... Read the complete review

Catfights and Spotlights is the sixth and most recent album from the Sugababes (Sweet 7 is to be released shortly). I was actually quite worried when this was released, as it seemed to be quite rushed, and I thought perhaps they should have waited and taken their time a bit more. The album promises to move away from the pure pop sound of Change to create a more retro feel. Track Listing 1. Girls - This samples the song made famous by the Boots Christmas adverts. It showcases the retro sound the album is going for, but while it's a strong song, it isn't one of my favourites. 2. You on a Good Day - This song is fun and retro-sounding, with ... As we entered 2008, the Sugababes had further cemented their status as the UK's biggest girlband with the hugely successful single 'About You Now' and their fifth studio album 'Change'. Despite losing one of the band's founder members in Mutya Buena, it seemed that nothing could stop the Sugababes brand from continuing to dominate as 'About You Now' became the biggest hit of their 9 year career. Fast forward 9 months and you have the Babes gearing up for the annual album release, just in time to line their fans Christmas stockings. 'Catfights & Spotlights' is their sixth album, a great achievement for any manufactured pop band, especially a girl group. ... Read the complete review
