Advantages: Good tracks, funny lyrics

Disadvantages: Becomes a novelty after a while

Cereal Killer is Green Jelly's 2nd album, originally called Green Jello, the band started out as a comedy punk band from New York, getting chucked out of various clubs for their antics such as smashing televisions on stage, they played as a support band for The Ramones in the mid 80's as well as New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders, after various events involving ice cream, green jell-o and other such desirable deserts, the band gained the reputation as a food-throwing rock n roll act. They later add an element of heavy metal in to their music and this can be seen on this album.

The album was released in 1991 in funny circumstances as the band approached Zoo Entertainment and said they were the first video-only band and offered to make the album including pictures, videos and music for a mere $50,000, the record company took them up on the offer but Green Jelly had to learn as they went along as it was all a hoax and they had no idea what to do! The video album was completed though and sold 100,000 copies only but later receive some air-play and became more well-known 2 years later in 93.

Their track "3 Little Pigs" which took MTV by storm in 1993 remains popular to the day and devours rock n roll in a humorous way with lyrics like

Well the second little piggy, well he was kinda stoked.
He spent most of his time just a gone just smokin.
Huffin and a puffin down on Venice Beach.
Getting paid money for religious speech.
He built his shelter from what he garbage picked.
Mostly made up of old cans and sticks.
Then one day he was cranking out Bob Marley,
and along came the Wolf on his big bad Harley.

or

Well the third little piggy, the grade A student.
His daddy was a rock star, named Pig Nugent.
Earned his Masters Degree, from Harvard College.
Built his house from his architect knowledge.
A tri-level mansion, Hollywood Hills.
Daddy's rock stardom, paid for the bills.
And then one day came the old house smasher

all the time whilst belting out very competent hard rock/metal. Of course their most well known track is not the only good thing about this album, other hits include a cover of Anarchy in the UK which fuses a Flintstones theme with the punk original, a very worthy try. The tracks do start to become a bit of a novelty after a while though and the comedic value soon starts to wear off with exception to the Three Little Pigs track which I could listen to almost every day. I'm not sure I'd recommend buying it because I'm not sure you'd liten to it more than once or twice, perhaps a good historical document of US comedy punk though anyway.

1. "Obey the Cowgod" - 3:10
2. "Three Little Pigs" - 5:54
3. "Cereal Killer" - 3:30
4. "Rock-N-Roll Pumpkihn" - 2:43
5. "Anarchy in the U.K." - 3:29
6. "Electric Harley House (Of Love)" - 4:37
7. "Trippin' on XTC" - 3:42
8. "Misadventures of Shitman" - 3:08
9. "House Me Teenage Rave" - 4:30
10. "Flight of the Skajaquada" - 4:00
11. "Green Jellö Theme Song" - 2:15

Summary: Worth a listen once or twice
