... released singles chart in the UK top 40 (back at a time where it was actually quite hard to get to #1) so the album met with reasonable but not phenomenal success. For me, this album had the typical carefree and swaggering Britpop attitude that made that era what it was as well as being chocked full of easy listening poppy rock songs or rocky pop songs (I'm not sure which) accompanied by fun, cocky, albeit slightly abstract, lyrics. The sound for this album is derived from constructing their songs with guitar arpeggios ...more

Premium Review Change Giver - Shed Seven: Give Shed Seven a chance for a change (1563 words)

Having gone on a nostalgic trip down memory lane by going to see Shed Seven in concert on their latest tour (December 2009) it made me realise that I had forgotten what a fantastic yet highly underrated band they were. Despite not having listened to them for years I found myself singing horrifically out of tune to all the words alongside the rest of the crowd and developed a new urge work my way through their discography starting with their debut studio album Change Giver. Band Background ============ Shed Seven were a Brit pop / indie rock outfit formed in 1990 in York comprising of Rick Witter (vocals) and Joe Johnston (guitar, ...  Read the complete review

Shed Seven are one of the first bands I can honestly say I really go into. This is Shed 7?s debut album Change Giver. The York band burst onto the scene with this album back in 1994 and instantly got themselves a loyal fan base with some cracking songs. The Band: Rick Witter: Vocals Tom Gladwin: Bass Paul Banks: Guitar/Keyboards Alan Leach: Drums The album opens with ?Dirty Soul?. It starts with a guitar building up and fading out with the odd drum beat in there and then really picking up before the vocals come in. The intro is quite long and as the first song on the album it is a great opener. A strong drum beat accompanied by ...  Read the complete review

It's usual to see a genre come and go in a decade. But that's what I've managed to see happen with indie – it came into it's own in the mid-90s, and now it's faded away just as quickly. There was nothing wrong with it, it's just that most of the bands either split, or faded into obscurity. There's still some great indie bands around, but the genre as is has died. I haven't seen a good indie band come to the surface in years, and I think I'm fair in my post mortem. But it doesn't mean we can't have fond memories of musical times past, and indeed to enjoy some of the bands that were strong enough to survive the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Witter Without You (670 words)

Rating:

You've got to hand it to Shed Seven's incredible longevity. Where other bands would have thrown in the towel long ago these perennial underachievers continue to ply their trade with limited success. They are just about to launch into their umpteenth tour of the UK which will perhaps mean that this time next year these words could be irrelevant. Or could it be the shed end? Then again it took Pulp ten years to break even. It is hard to figure out why Shed Seven have rarely impacted on mainstream consciousness. On paper at least they have a good fighting chance. Rick Witter gives off the notion of a preening rock star (who on the cover of this ...  Read the complete review

Under Satanae - Moonspell
It's excellent to hear the band rerecord old material. The album brings nothing new to the genre of dark metal.

Ungentle Exhumation - Cryptopsy
Affordable way to own a previously rare and historically significant item. Still sounds similar to much tech-death, and brief at only four tracks.

Touch Wood - Antonio Forcione
Excellent virtuoso musician. Not everyones cup of tea.

Tip Of The Iceberg / Takin... - New Found Glory
Two discs included here of utmost excellence. Despite the fact 18 tracks are included here there's just a mere 27 minutes of music.

Tokyo Warhearts - Children Of Bodom
Tight and well-selected early performance. Only draws from two studio albums, and solo performances are disappointing.

Transcendence - Crimson Glory
Improves on the first album... ...but is stylistically identical.
