      A nice album

      ----------------------
      Who is Gavin DeGraw
      ----------------------

31 year old Gavin DeGraw first hit the big time when the show One Tree Hill first aired 5 years ago. His song 'I Don't Wanna Be' a catchy song about being who you want to be became the theme song for the first 4 years until they decided to just go with a black background title.

Gavin grew up in New York and started performing in Manhattan clubs before he got his big break. He released his album Chariot in 2003 and in 2004 rereleased it as a Stripped version, which is what I'm reviewing at the moment.

      The Album
      ------------

Gavin DeGraw's Stripped album is two CD's so I have tried to set it out as best I can. If anyone has any ideas of a better way without me looking like I'm trying to 'fill' as you say, please tell me. Enjoy the review.

CD 1 Review of Follow Through
      ---------------------------------
"Oh this is the start of something good, I haven't felt like this in so many moons" this is the start to this wonderful piece of music and the lyrics totally explain what I was hoping to say. This is the start of an amazing album and it really sets the tone for DeGraw and his style. It's a nice slow but up-tempo song with Gavin's talents shining through. He has a very raw and unique voice; I don't think you'll find another artist out there with such an amazing raw talent like this.

Memorable Lyrics: "Oh this is the start of something good, don't you agree"

Rating: 8/10 (A very good start to a brilliant album, he really shines in this song, another great addition to the album)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Follow Through
      -------------------------------------------

Not my favourite by any means, it's so much better with all of the instruments and being done in the studio. It's a lot rawer like this and his voice is beautiful still however doesn't go as well with this song live.

      Stripped Rating: 6/10

      -------------------------
      Track 2: Chariot
      -------------------------

      CD 1 Review of Chariot
      -------------------------
Chariot is one of the more complex piano compliment songs on the album. It's got some lovely lyrics which really do speak to you. This is possibly one of the most famous songs on the album despite I Don't Wanna Be and you can really tell why. It's one of his best, as the lyrics really shine and they are very beautiful and everything just fits perfectly. It's a beautiful song and I would recommend this in a second.

Memorable Lyrics: "Your favourite fruit is chocolate covered cherries, and seedless watermelons, nothing from the ground is good enough"

Rating: 9/10 (This is truly one of his best pieces, everything just seems to fit and it's one of the shining stars on the album)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Chariot
      -------------------------------------
I am a big fan of this song when it's played normal, but I really do like it when's it's acoustic. I do believe it's weaker when he sings it acoustic however his voice is just so raw which I think this song really needs. It really goes with the backing music. A very nice acoustic piece.

      Stripped Rating: 8/10

      -------------------------
      Track 3: Good Friends
      -------------------------

CD 1 Review of Good Friends
      ----------------------------
Another popular track on the album, it's such a beautiful song and the beats in it are just amazing. He really knows how to put a song together. It sounds like none of the others on the album, which I think is one of the reasons this album is so good as each song is unique. Its defiantly one of my favourites on the album, however there are stronger ones on the album, it is a beautiful lyrical song which I think everyone will enjoy.

Memorable Lyrics: "I'll forgive you for what you've done, if you say I'm the one"

Rating: 7/10 (A very good addition to this album)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Good Friends
      ---------------------------------------
Hated the start of this track, he's messing around with the piano too much for my liking. Made me want to turn the track over however it does get into it and it turns out to be even better than the original piece. He uses what I think is violins which are playing very sharply; it really goes well with his voice. A beautiful piece even better than the normal piece.

      Stripped Rating: 8/10

      -------------------------
Track 4: (Nice To Meet You) Anyway
      -------------------------

CD 1 Review of Nice To Meet You Anyway
      ----------------------------------------
One of my favourites on the album, it's considered one of the weaker songs however I just think the lyrics are beautiful and the piano just goes well with his powerful voice. There's a bit near the end where he sings along with the guitar just playing one note quite harshly, this bit just shows what talent he has as this composition of the music is just perfect.

Memorable Lyrics: "So before this goes to far, let me tell you what you are, you're amazing, I'm attracted, but I'm terribly distracted"

Rating: 7/10 (A very strong song, a very good beat as well which goes along perfectly with his voice.

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Nice To Meet You Anyway
      ----------------------------------------------------

Disappointing, his voice seems quite forced and it is such a better song with all the instruments behind it. The lyrics are still awesome however it's defiantly one of the weaker one's on track two.

      Stripped Rating: 4/10

      -------------------------
      Track 5: Chemical Party
      -------------------------

CD 1 Review of Chemical Party
      -----------------------------
Probably the worse on the album, it's another popular one though as it's been released in America as a single, but I've never been a fan. It just doesn't really go with the rest of the album, the lyrics aren't amazing, the beats are annoying more than brilliant. It should have been a good song however this is just too weak for my liking.

Memorable Lyrics: "you're just too high to see the point, you think your name is pass the joint"

Rating: 3/10 (The song is about a girl at a party who is too high to realize Gavin's there, not really a shiner on the album)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Chemical Party
      ----------------------------------------
Wasn't looking forward to listening to this as I didn't enjoy it normally and it still disappointed me. Reminded me a little bit of a one hit wonder called Paolo Nutini who I couldn't stand. I'm afraid to say it got turned over quite quickly. Worse than the normal track.

      Stripped Rating: 1/10

      -------------------------
      Track 6: Belief
      -------------------------

      CD 1 Review of Belief
      ---------------------
A gorgeous song, the lyrics may seem a bit weird to most people and to me even as they don't make as much sense as all of the lyrics. The song is apparently about someone who defended and captured his heart however the lyrics are not really explaining that to me. Despite what is usually one of his strong points, the lyrics, the beat is beautiful as is his voice and it's one of the most memorable songs on the album.

Memorable Lyrics: "When you came to my defence, with a knife, in the shape of your mouth, in the form of your body, in the wrap of a guy, you stand by me"

Rating: 8/10 (I don't usually give a high rating for poor lyrics but this song is very memorable and such a beautiful beat and his voice is really raw and powerful and the ending of this song is magnificent. I think it would have been a 10/10 if the lyrics actually made sense)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Belief
      --------------------------------
Even more gorgeous in stripped mode. It actually makes you listen to the lyrics where in the normal version you spend your time listening to the beat more. It's a really beautiful song, despite the fact the lyrics aren't his norm style. It's just such a beautiful song especially when it's stripped.

      Stripped Rating: 9/10

      -------------------------
      Track 7: Crush
      -------------------------

      CD 1 Review of Crush
      ---------------------
A very good strong track, it's a very nice song however I'm not to keen on the bridge, but if you can forget that it's a beautiful song with amazing lyrics. His voice again really shines out in this song, it's a very original voice and he makes sure that he uses it to it's full, especially in this song. Lovely song however slightly unmemorable.

Memorable Lyrics: "When my pass came in, you dropped the ball, It didn't change the way I feel, and I was wishing I'd break down your walls, the kiss will know if the lips stay still"

Rating: 7/10 (A very good song)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Crush
      ------------------------------

Not much to say on this one as it's not much different from the normal version. I think it's still a beautiful song however and I'm still not too keen on the bridge.

      Stripped Rating: 7/10

      -------------------------
      Track 8: I Don't Wanna Be
      -------------------------

CD 1 Review of I Don't Wanna Be
      ----------------------------------
Everyone's favourite song in my opinion, I could listen to this over and over again and never get bored. I first heard Gavin on the show One Tree Hill and I think this song is just amazing. The lyrics are amazing and his voice especially in the chorus are pure brilliance. I do prefer the acoustic one however they use on the show where he repeats the first line of the chorus twice as it sounds a lot more powerful. A beautiful song about being who you want to be and not who everyone wants you too be.

Memorable Lyrics: "I Don't Want To Be, anything other than what I've been trying to be lately, I'm tired of looking around rooms wondering what I've gotta do or who I'm supposed to be, I don't want to be anything other than what I'm supposed to be"

Rating: 10/10 (Definitely the best song the album, very strong)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of I Don't Wanna Be
      --------------------------------------------

I still prefer the version that they have on One Tree Hill. I think it's more acoustic on the show than stripped, and the stripped version is quite a disappointment as I adore this song, but not in this version.

      Stripped Rating: 6/10

      -------------------------
      Track 9: Meaning
      -------------------------

      CD 1 Review of Meaning
      ----------------------
One of the weaker songs on the album, however it is a gorgeous song but isn't very memorable and I do tend to skip it when I'm listening to it in the car. I have no idea why because it's like all of the other songs, strong lyrics, strong vocals and an amazing beat however it just does nothing for me. There is a nice bit at the end of the song, the beat gets faster and the lyrics go very well.

Memorable Lyrics: "Restless minds, curtains fall, follow fanfares, troubled hearts, just a walk down the hall"

Rating: 5/10 (No idea why this song just doesn't do anything for me, doesn't make me smile when listening to it, doesn't make me go, wow this guy can sing)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Meaning
      ----------------------------------

It's actually a very nice song when it's stripped. I'm not a big fan of this however in this version I think it's gorgeous, and memorable which makes it different from the other version.

      Stripped Rating: 8/10

      -------------------------
      Track 10: More than Anyone
      -------------------------

CD 1 Review of More than Anyone
      --------------------------------
A really beautiful song and I'm sure a lot of people would love it, however I find it does drag along a little bit. I'm very much a rock chick and this song is just a bitty to balladry and poppy for my liking. That's not taking away that it's a beautiful preformed song, everything just seems to go well together, however it does nothing for me.

Memorable Lyrics: "You need a friend I'll be around, don't let this end, before I see you again, what, can I say to convince you to change your mind, for me. I'm gonna love you more than anyone"

Rating: 6/10 (A beautiful song, but I find it drags too much for my liking)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of More than Anyone
      -------------------------------------------

I prefer this in the original version, it's such a beautiful song and this does it justice however for some reason I think the original is a lot more powerful which this song needs to be.

      Stripped Rating: 5/10

      -------------------------
      Track 11: Over-Rated
      -------------------------

      CD 1 Review of Over-Rated
      -------------------------
Too much of a slow song for my liking just like More Than Anyone, it does get faster. However the lyrics are amazing which is why I've given this quite a higher rate, and his voice really does shine in this song. One of the disappointments is that it's slightly unmemorable.

Memorable Lyrics: "I just want to give it all to you, I want to share it with you"

Rating: 6/10 (A lovely song, but too slow and unmemorable)

CD 2 (Stripped) Review of Over-Rated
      -------------------------------------

I didn't really like this track as it was too slow for me and Gavin has slowed this one down even more so it's not really my cup of tea.

      Stripped Rating: 3/10

      -------------------------
Track 12: Get Lost (CD 1
      -------------------------

I didn't even realise this was on the CD till I've just looked, quite a disappointing song and very unmemorable. Probably one of the weaker tracks on the album, I must usually just skip it as I didn't even know there was a track 12 on the first CD.

Memorable Lyrics: "I've had days of wine and women and wine, spending all my precious time, I wish I could just reqind, but it's just play feels like fast forward some days"
      Rating: 2/10

      --------------------------------------------------
Track 12: Change Is Gonna Come (Encore) Stripped (CD-2
      --------------------------------------------------

This was originally done by Sam Cooke and it's a nice song, but nothing powerful like DeGraw's own work, however his vocals really shine on this track. A beautiful piece of music.

      Rating: 8/10

      -------------------------
      Overall View Of CD 1
      -------------------------

CD 1 is defiantly the best of the 2 CD. It shows of DeGraw's vocal talents the best and it's just a very good CD for an amazing artist. There are a few bum songs on the album which is a shame but the great ones make up for that.

      -------------------------
      Overall View of CD 2
      -------------------------

Disappointing is the only word for this CD. Only two of the songs are either the same or better which is a shock because usually this is the other way around.

      -------------------------
      My Opinion
      -------------------------
Gavin DeGraw has an amazing voice. I'll start with that. He is incredibly talented, both as a singer and a songwriter. This CD would be brilliant if it had more tracks on it that were more memorable, there are a few really good songs on there however the rest pale in comparison and you never really remember them again. However it's a very amazing style that DeGraw has, he puts his amazing vocals against these amazing forceful melodies to make these relaxing rock songs. Despite some of the songs being unmemorable this is the song you can listen too in the car or in the background. It's a beautiful album, especially the stripped acoustic version.

The reason I think this CD works is because of Gavin DeGraw's style, he manages to put not only great beats together, but his voice and his writing ability really sell the CD and make you feel like you're walking in his shoes. DeGraw is a very sensitive and passionate artist, and each lyric has every ounce of emotion in him come through to make the song perfect.

No track is like another, which is quite a feat in most albums that are out at the moment. They all seem to be re-done, there's the same sort of beat and the same sort of lyrics, however each song on his album is unique and each beat is unique and so are the lyrics.

If you like One Tree Hill, I'm slightly ahead due to the fact I get the episodes from America, and in the finale of Season 5 there is a great performance with Jamie and Gavin DeGraw singing 'I Don't Wanna Be'. Even if you don't watch One Tree Hill, check this out on YouTube (Jamie & Gavin DeGraw) and I'm sure it'll get an awww out of you.

Despite the bum songs it's still a great album and well worth checking out.

      Hoped this helped.
