To call Chic a disco band is like calling Michelangelo a painter and decorator. Like all seminal artists, they simply exist in a universe of their own, impervious to anything but their 20/20 tunnel vision. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards - AKA The Chic Organization - were alchemists who honed their formula to perfection. And it was definitely a formula. All Chic songs sound pretty much the same. This might be a problem if they hadn´t got it So Right. The metronomic backbeat laid down by drummer Tony Thompson, Edwards´ elastic basslines, the glistening staccato guitar chops of Rodgers, the keyboards and the strings weaving in and out of the mix. Chic released "Risqué" in 1979 as their third album. It saw the New York based (primarily) Disco-playing band come up with material which found them getting into not only this type of work but addition to it, some much deeper styles such as Soul and Funk in order to get some appeal from listeners other than those who had been into earlier music from them. 1. "Good Times" The album begins with a single which was probably the most well-known work to come off the record. It is a killer, up-lifting record which went on to act as the foundation to not only Hip Hop (going on to be sampled in "Rapper's Delight" and many subsequent tunes from ...
