Mastercuts - Breaks

Premium Review Mastercuts Breaks (2001) (376 words)

Rating:

I have to say that my history lessons at school were never as enjoyable as this. For that's what "Mastercuts Breaks" is - a lesson in hip-hop history, and a damned funky one to boot. The album is essentially a collection of some of the most commonly-sampled tracks in hip-hop, some which will be instantly familiar, some a little more obscure, but all fantastic tracks in their own right. Referring to them as "source material" sounds a little cold and academic, but that's what they are, the building blocks for some of the freshest and most innovative music of the 80s and 90s. In particular, James Brown's "Funky Drummer", the most sampled track ...

Now That's What I Call Music! 51

Premium Review Better songs than other Now albums (227 words)
by mousedadrummer - written on 09/08/09 (Useful, 10 readings)

The Now Thats What I Call Music series of compilation albums have been one of the nations most popular ever since they started in 1983. Now 51 was released in 2002 and contains 43 of the years best hits. Some of the songs on the album are abit cheesy for me as I'm more into rock than songs such as "Me Julie" By Ali G feat Shaggy. However this is one of the better of the Now albums I have listened to as it contains some tracks by rock bands unlike previous albums which are mostly pop tracks. Songs such as In Too Deep by Sum 41, Handbags and Gladrags by Stereophonics and How You Remind me by Nickelback are some of my favourites. There are songs for people who are into their club ...

Now That's What I Call Music! 51

Premium Review Number 51 from the Now team! (409 words)
by pmcds - written on 03/02/09 (Very useful, 35 readings)
Rating:

Now 51 has an impressive array of hits, spread across its two discs. The 42 tracks are set up in a similar format to how the Now That's What I Call Music crew have generally compiled each release, which means that the more dance orientated tracks are to be found on the second disc, with the first disc containing more of the commercially poppy tracks. I like this release from the Now team, and there are only a couple of tracks that I'm not so much of a fan of. Disc 1 starts off with the immensely popular Hero from Enrique Iglesias, and although I wasn't particularly a fan of Blue's Fly By II or Shaggy's Me Julie, you can't deny that they were very popular and deserve their place ...
