Long Black Veil - The Chieftains

Premium Review Long, Black Veil (1975 words)

transferring one medium (music) into another (writing). But I thought I would give it a stab with one of my all time favorite albums. Long Black Veil by The Chieftains is probably one of my top ten favorite’s albums of all time. Now, I will admit that it is not popular music, nor it is it for everyone. Many people would find it an odd choice. Irish music isn’t for everyone. However, I think this album may have more general appeal than the other albums by the Chieftains. Why would I think that? Because this album isn’t just the Chieftains. It is songs played by the Chieftains but the songs are sung by a variety of popular singers, such as Mick ...

Tears Of Stone - Chieftains

Premium Review They made sweet music (438 words)

CD title "TEARS OF STONE". This CD is amongst my best buys! Combine The Cheiftains music with some superb female vocalists and you have a gem of an album to listen to. The fact that the special guests are all women gives you a clue to the main theme of the album, yes, it is love, and I unashamedly admit I am a bit of a softie! I won't list every track, but I will mention a few of my favourites The first track is a talk track, with background music composed by Paddy Molony. It is the voice of Brenda Fricker (better known from the TV series casualty) speaking the words of W.B. Yeats, and is entitled "Never give all the heart". It is bitter ...

Tears Of Stone - Chieftains

Premium Review Whistles and women! (316 words)

On 'Tears of Stone' The Chieftains joined up with a variety of wonderful female singers to give traditional Irish songs a modern feel. Each song on this CD features a different female singer (the list includes:- Joan Osborne; The Corrs; Natalie Merchant, Sinead O' Connor and Mary Chaplin Carpenter). My favourite tracks from Tears of Stone are Joan Osborne's goosebump-inducing rendition of Raglan Road. I am not a huge Corrs fan, but I loved them singing I Know My Love (a very bouncy and upbeat song). Siuil A Run is one of those songs that never fails to move and The Fiddling Ladies will certainly get your feet tapping. One song is sung in Japanese (I ...

Calming, beautiful voice. Maybe a little boring for some.

Almost everything Well...perhaps a little boring sometimes...very very occasionally though...

Great single, great penultimate track Winter theme was unnecessary

Melodic, intelligent album from a truly great indie band A few abrasive tracks and some overly introspective ones

A lot of work done by one man Voice far too whingey

A great choice of song, the comedians don't overdo it Not really more than a single, time has moved on a little bit

Soviet Kitsch - Regina Spektor
Complex, iknteresting, thought provoking, beautiful Slighly less mature than "Begin to Hope"

Neon Bible - Arcade Fire
Highly emotive, powerful music - making, strong instrumentation Poor lyrically, not enough gothic church organ for my taste

Into Glory Ride - Manowar
Perfects the band's epic heavy metal sound, and features many of their finest songs. Too predominantly slow for some.

Insomniac - Enrique Iglesias
Quality, chilled out pop music that complement Enrique's seductive style Nothing daring here

Hail To England - Manowar
Simplistic and enjoyable classic heavy metal. Disappointing lack of progression after the previous album, and mediocre songs.

Greatest Hits - Psychedelic Furs
A good introduction to an underrated band Many of the best early tracks missing

Candide - 1999 Royal National Theatre Recordings - Soundtrack
Well performed with a great orchestra and brilliant singers Detailed music that needs a few runs before you get used to it

Breathe In - Lucie Silvas
Some lovely vocals with heartfelt lyrics Not keen on a few of the songs

Battle Hymns - Manowar
Classic old-school heavy metal songs on more diverse topics than the band usually covers. Weak and simplistic compared to the second album and others, partly due to the temporary line-up.

Attack Decay Sustain Release - Simian Mobile Disco
Full of tunes, starts with a bang Second half of the album doesnt have the same impact as the first
