Advantages: Great voice, classic ballads
Disadvantages: A couple of weaker links
**Introduction**
Christina Aguilera has become one of the biggest selling female solo artists of all time and has one of the widest fan bases of any current solo artist. She became a star back in 1999 with the release of her self titled debut album and has since released two albums since, which are Stripped and Back to Basics. She's also releasing a new album this year.
**The album**
1.) Genie in a bottle
This is a huge track to get things off with, when it was released this uptempo pop track was one of the biggest factors in Christina Aguilera's career launching the way it did. Ten years on this is still a huge track on the radio and various music video channels. This is catchy pop that is not just loved by kids but adults too.
2.) What A girl wants
This is another single that helped launch her into a star. This track is about wanting a man to promise they'll treat you right before you get with them. This is a wonderfully flowing pop track which shows everyone that she can do subtle aswell as belting it out. One of her most well known singles and also one of her best uptemo singles to date.
3.) I Turn to You
This is a cover of the All 4 One track which appeared in Space Jam. Christina's version Is one of my favourite tracks from the album, It shows a tender side to her voice and she performs this emotive ballad superbly well. A beautiful song that is beautifully sung. This track is about when you need someone when things are not going well for you and you need someone.
4.) So Emotional
This track starts quite gently then moves into a midtempo swinging pop/r&b track. Not up there with the best on the album but it's a more than decent track which has appeal.
5.) Come On Over (All I Want Is You)
This is another uptempo track, it's one of the quickest tracks on the album and has a great flow which is great to dance to. This is another slice of decent uptempo pop. This was released as the 5th and final single from the album.
6.) Reflection
This is another track which comes from a movie soundtrack, this time it's the Disney film Mulan. This is one of her most acclaimed early ballads, it's a tale about feeling like you are someone else and not comfortable with who you are and basically searching for your inner self. A great ballad which she has also recorded in Spanish like a number of these tracks for her album Mi Reflejo.
7.) Love for All Seasons
This is one of the weakest tracks on the album, although recording in 1999 it sounds slightly early 1990's which gives it a dated feel which lets it down a bit. Not a bad track, it's a decent pop track but certainly not up there with the best on the album.
8.) Somebody's Somebody
This sounds a little like it could have been Janet Jackson with the musical style but Christina's voice adds a different touch. This is a little better than the previous track but again not up there with the best on the album. quite catchy though.
9.) When You Put Your Hands on Me
This is an uptempo track which opens softly then has a great flow, This was written by Robin Thicke and if you listen you can tell as it has a very similar feel to his track When I Get You Alone. This naturally has a great flow and is one of the best uptempo tracks on the album.
10.) Blessed
This is a ballad which has some great use of percussion, This is one of her most flowing ballads and is up there with the best on the album, This track is about feeling blessed with your how things are going with your relationship and feeling you're with the right person.
11.) Love Will Find A Way
This is the most teen pop like track on the album but somehow it works really well. This is a very flowing, catchy track with some great hooks, It's actually quite a decent track despite the teen pop feel.
12.) Obvious
We close the album here with a fantastic ballad, it starts with a beautifully gentle piano piece then Christina's vocals come in after a while. This is a great example of the quality of ballads on this album and proves she had amazing talent even then.
**Overall**
This is Christina Aguilera's debut album and despite a couple of weaker tracks it is a very fine album indeed. The ballads are really special just like many of her ballads since. An amazing 17 million copies of this album have been sold and it's not a fluke. When you listen to her recent hits remember this album as the one which made her.
