The F Four Tops had the same line-up for no less than 44 years, from their formation as The Four Aims in 1953, to the death of Lawrence Payton in 1997. That’s a record which no other act in popular music is likely to come remotely near. Though their periods of success were pretty scattered, in the 60s they were unquestionably the greatest Tamla-Motown group of all. Several compilation albums have appeared on the market over the years, and while none is quite perfect, this – which includes the odd few hits they had after leaving Motown - hits the mark better than the rest.
