El Cid - The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus ... 1950s and early 60s were the heyday for biblical and historic epics in Hollywood, and these types of films spawned the great majority of the studios big releases over these years. Films like Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur and Julius Caesar were the order of the day for the big box office successes and often employed state-of-the-art filming techniques like super widescreens and filming in colour (still very much a coming attraction), and no-costs-spared production values of elaborate sets, costumes and box office draws of big-star actors. Filippa Giordano ... Giordano? not heard of her? Well after reading this I suggest you do, her album is absolutely sensational! my mum was the one who introduced me to her music. I m 21 and don t really rate classical, I think It s hard to listen too and would quite honestly rather listen to Lady Gaga, However my mum said " Just listen to her, you won t have heard anything like it, I can t put my finger on what she sings and sounds like". So I did, I listen to Casta Diva the first song and found myself in a trance and couldn t believe how unique and beautiful her voice was, her voice is certainly extraordinary, sweet and graceful. Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 - Gustavo Dudamel Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela ... bought this after seeing the orchestra at the Henry Wood Proms, where they did a sensational concert which was greeted with wild applause, cheers and foot-stamping. It s brave of Dudamel to come up with this coupling, and on the whole it works. The orchestra as listed is huge, and if they all played, the ensemble and precision are remarkable. There is some very good solo playing, particularly from woodwind, and the recording is fine. The inner parts in the strings are sonorous and clearly defined and the bass line is always powerful and purposeful. Speeds are mostly conventional, though the final movement of the 7th.
