Virtuoso - David Garrett ... is a fantastic album for music fans. Although this is David Garrett s debut here in the UK, this doesn t do his career justice; he s had various other cds released in Europe and has been an acclaimed violinist from a young age. First picking up the violin at the age of four, when his elder brother took up the instrument, David ended up being a natural and eventually, as his album suggests, a virtuoso! The album features popular classics, such as Pachelbel s Cannon and The Flight of the Bumblebee (for which David holds the world record for the fastest rendition), which means that it is a great record for people who like light and popular classical music, as w... A Child Of Our Time - Tippett ... now and again you come across a piece of music that is so emotionally powerful, that moves you so profoundly, that somehow you know that your life will never be the same again. For me, Michael Tippett s A Child of Our Time is that piece of music. Back when I was studying for my A-Levels, my music teacher recommended I join the local choral society who Tippett s oratorio A Child of Our Time in their upcoming programme: "It s one of those pieces that you just have to sing" my teacher enthused and me, being 17 and stubbornly sceptical of the world, grudgingly signed up. Gilbert & Sullivan: Princess Ida - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ... wonderful to hear such a crisp and spirited performance on this, one of Gilbert and Sullivan s lesser-known operettas. Particular mention must be made of Ann Hood as Lady Psyche, but the whole cast is very well put together under the baton of Sir. Malcolm Sargent. As usual the storyline focuses on mistaken identities; men dressing as women, princesses not arriving etc. etc. There are some lovely tunes and catchy melodies in Princess Ida, though over the years it hasn t become one of the favourites .
