The Essential Collection - George Gershwin:
... can't add anything to Pingu's excellent crit of Gershwin (even though he doesn't mention his lovely wife, Ira) except that I feel he hasn't given Porgy and Bess a fair chance. This opera has some of the best songs that came out of the USA in that phenomenal decade, the 30's. Without being able to give a reason, I think "Bess You Is My Woman Now" is THE most fabulous tune and who ca... Read the full review: Porgy and Bess by jdidlock |

The Best Of Boccherini ... is yet another composer whose huge output is largely ignored and who is known by just one movement from just one work, a string quintet. If you've seen "The Lady Killers" you will know the piece, it is the one the bunch of crooks endlessly pretended they were practising - Tiddle-iddle-um dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum etc....! In his day (1743-1805) he was very well known and travelled widely. He was a virtuoso cellist He landed a court appointment with William Frederick of Prussia and while in that position he composed no less than 125 works for string quintet, 100 for string quartet and 50 string trios. There are also some 30 or so sympho... Read the full review: Not a one-hit wonder by jdidlock |

Vivaldi - The Four Seasons ... had only a tiny part of his vast output published in his lifetime, 12 opus numbers in all. These are various collections of concerti and sonatas and from one set, the opus 8 which rejoices in the sub-title "A Trial between Harmony and Invention" (whatever that is supposed to mean) come the dreaded 4 Seasons. I say "dreaded" because much as I love them, they are only 4 out of a set of 12 concerti and how often do the rest get played? Hardly ever. Other sets in these 12 opera have catchy titles like "La Stravaganza", Le Cetra and l'Estro Armonico which you can really get your teeth round. But beyond this tip of the V... Verdi - Requiem ... can't disagree more with Pingu's view, I love Verdi. In fact, I almost take the opposite view that the Requiem is too "operatic", but not quite, I love that too! This last summer, I had one of the most magical experiences of my life. I was pottering round San Gimignano in Tuscany with a couple of friends late one Sunday evening and we happened across the dress rehearsal of "Otello" taking place in one of the town squares. We were able to watch this free and were transfixed for 4 hours, from 22:00, by the excellent performance by a group from Florence. "Otello" was already one of my favourite Verdi operas (as is "Ot...
