How can I convince you that Filippa Giordano has one of the most stunning voices you will ever hear and that if you listen to the CD you will be carried away into a land of enchantment? “Never heard of her,” You are probably saying to yourself – but nor had I. I just heard her briefly on the Classical Brit awards last year and was immediately captivated by her amazing voice which is reminiscent of a graceful bird dipping and diving, soaring and sweeping over an ocean. Bach, Carl Phillip Emanuel ... suppose Carl Philipp Emmanuel's greatest problem is his father.Since he shares the same surname with one of, if not THE greatest composers of all times and places, he tends to be hidden somewhat by the shadow cast by his uber-genius of a father. This is a pity. In his own right, Carl Philipp Emmanuel was an immensely talented composer. Certainly the most talented of the Bach children his music, on the tail end of the baroque and the galant style perfected by his friend (and that of his father) Teleman, his music is a good introduction to the classical style of Haydn and Mozart. Bach: Mit Fried Und Freud (cantatas Bwv 8, 125, 138) /herreweghe ... enthusiasts of classical music, even the most laid back, can have failed to have noted the explosion in CDs of Bach's music over the past year, released to coincide with the two hundredth anniversary of his death. Soem recordings have been unremarkable, but anything by Herreweghe, including rereleases of his older recordings by Harmonia Mundi and Virgin Classics, has been fantastic. His choir is drilled to perfection, but not lacking in human warmth and spiritual depth, their pronunciation of German faultless. His soloists are always first hand.
