Peace: Pure Classical Calm ... enjoy listening to classical music but would not say I am a huge fan. I love opera but classical music generally I can appreciate but would not tend to sit down and choose to listen to. My husband thought I needed to chill out a bit so bought me this Peace: Pure Classical Calm album. It contains 3 discs, which I think is a few too many. Although the tracks are varied, one disc would have sufficed. There is a mixture of film, TV, opera and classical music. Too many tracks to list here - 16 on each disc. Poison Sweet Madeira - Sophie Solomon ... Poison Sweet Madeira is an album of suprises. Each track differs in style but collectively they fit together perfectly. If you enjoy klezmer, jazz, classical or just something a little different then this ablum is perfect for you. If you don t strictly fit into any of these categories I d recommend it to you as each of the people I ve played it to have found something that appeals to them. It s such a mixed album that it trancends a rigid definition, which makes it harder to talk about in a review but brilliant to listen to on CD! Sophie is an amazingly accomplished musician. Mahler - Symphony No 5 ... is a lovely, natural, well-paced, fresh performance with very idiomatic singing from Maria Tauberova in the final movement. The playing is vintage Czech Phil. - rustic woodwind, mellow brass and very characterful string playing. There is a problem, and that is in the recording, which is usually clear and natural, like the performance, though old (1950). Just occasionally, though, the level drops, and that affects a couple of major climaxes, which is a pity. I suspect that with a bit of judicious electronic tweaking, this could be attended to, and I hope it will if/when a reissue appears. For now, 5-star performance just a little flawed by the sound.
