Are these really Aphex Twin Classics? (Classics - Aphex Twin)

Advantages: Exceptional dark hardcore, worth having as it's a piece of the Aphex puzzle.

Disadvantages: Not an ideal intro to his music, but then what is?

The music of Aphex Twin is an aural mystery to many many people, (not least my wife!) and the 'Classics' album won't help new listeners to get their head around it. In fact it may leave them wondering that, if these are the classics, what are the tracks that didn't make it onto here like?
Although I'd heard some Aphex Twin before, this was the first Aphex Twin CD I'd actually bought. As is mentioned in the other review of this collection, it perhaps wasn't the best place to start but I got on with it ok and have grown to love the many varied music by him since.

This album contains a mix of some of the harder tracks he's recorded from the late 80's/early 90's hardcore/rave scene. They tend to be heavy on hard beats, fairly dark but with that extra something that all the other forgotten tracks from that era didn't have. Sounds, like a digeridoo, or strange echos or acid tweaks make it different, but it's a good different and that's what makes it worth buying. It's also worth buying if you remember the old Tampax adverts from the 80's. Good times....

Overall, it is a decent enough purchase, but it's worth noting that this contains his earlier period tracks, which perhaps don't reflect the entire Aphex Twin oeuvre, i.e don't judge this artist by one album.

Summary: Classics? At the time, yes, but overall maybe less so.
