An intermediate release for Sweden’s In Flames, Clayman marks the end of the band’s melodic death metal era before they inexplicably moved onto pastures ‘nu.’ With 11 songs of varying degrees of mediocrity, Clayman isn’t a bad album, but one that fails consistently to learn what it is that it wants to try to sound like. As each In Flames release departs further and further from the melodic death metal sound they pioneered, it’s useful to trace this decadence back through their discography and find the point at which the band really started to lose it. It's a unique sound, it rocks none

Brings originality to Nu-metal genre, Tankian's incredible vocal talent and also Malakian's guitar wrestling. Such wide ranging styles as is shown in the musci will repell more people than Nu-metal ususally does.

Moves the genre forward, great use of synthesisers and guitar Not much variation, some songs are less memorable

Great sounds To much swearing.

Sonic hypnotism full of untold depths None

Brilliant combination of styles, Haunting atmosphere throughout, Talented band members Not much variationNot to everyone's taste

We're Going To Hell For This - Carpathian Forest
Honest and well-chosen retrospective. Live show is less enjoyable, due to repetitive style.

To Mega Therion - Celtic Frost
Extreme thrash classic with unbeatable atmosphere. Still rooted in the thrash tradition, which may disappoint.

Through Chasm Caves And Titan Woods - Carpathian Forest
Great start that hints at what might have been. More traditionally-minded songs still sound weak by comparison.

The Mechanical Hand - Horse The Band
Some strong keyboard sounds at times created here, the lyrics are pretty good. The album is poorly structured, the music created here often sounds a mess.

Strange Old Brew - Carpathian Forest
Boldly and enjoyably experimental, while making plenty of time more for primal fun. Tries patience at times.

Skjend Hans Lik - Carpathian Forest
Remastered demo is a nice present to the fans. Bulked out by worthlessly inferior material.

Mortal Mind Creation - Celesty
Progressive touches now work. Still indebted to the power metal tradition.

Morbid Fascination Of Death - Carpathian Forest
Experimental touches remain, despite dwindling. Too many songs sound the same.

Black Shining Leather - Carpathian Forest
Audible bass makes an interesting change. Confused and inconsistent on the one hand; repetitive on the other.

Defending The Throne Of Evil - Carpathian Forest
Great riffs and songs, atmospheric, tongue-in-cheek and entertaining None
