Advantages: ELvis sings again
Disadvantages: None
CLOSE UP is another of the fantastic 4 CD box sets which BMG produced a few years ago (other excellent sets are LIVE IN LAS VEGAS and TODAY, TOMORROW AND FOREVER).
This one is a career retrospective featuring a great many previously unreleased tracks. Songs are grouped together according to theme - so songs recorded in Nashville are grouped together for example, as are those Elvis recorded for some of his Hollywood movies. These movies are often looked-down-upon and it is easy to forget that Elvis in fact recorded some great music for some of them, and some of that music is represented here, such as in the songs SUJMMER KISSES WINTER TEARS and LONELY MAN.
Being a great fan of Elvis I like all the periods, from the 1950s rocking Elvis, through the movie music of the 1960s, but my favourite Elvis period has to be the 'live' Elvis of the 1970s. One of the discs in this set presents a complete concert from 1972 (not in Las Vegas, instead from a tour date in Texas) which is a joy to hear, with such classics as a very funky version of HOUND DOG and the always brilliant BURNING LOVE (which interestingly is a song that Elvis didn't really like himself, although the version performed here is absolutely rocking).
This is a fantastic set. I can't recommend it highly enough.
