      Closing Night

This CD is another from the specialist Elvis Presley record label FTD, and this time the label have treated us to the final show from Elvis' 9th season in Las Vegas, which took place in 1973 (interestingly enough for me, this was the year I was born!).

By now Elvis was wel-and-truly bored with performing live in Las Vegas, seeing the routine as being one which his manager kept booking for him simply because he (the manager, Col. Tom Parker) was heavily in debt to the casino.

The CD therefore features an Elvis who is not at his best - he sounds bored in may songs, but also plays around with the lyrics of many of them, and cracks jokes which too my ears are bitterly unfunny.

There are some good performances though - THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE is beautiful, but there are some really odd performances too, such as Elvis singing the lyrics of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER to the backing of SUSPICIOUS MINDS - it just sounds weird and, again, unfunny.

This is definitely not a CD for the casual listener, but to serious Elvis fans it is an important CD to own as it is important to see the imperfections in the man.
