Advantages: A good album to complement other Flaming Lips stuff

Disadvantages: Maybe a little too much for some

I don’t want to get too in-depth here. The Flaming Lips are one of my favourite bands, and this album complements my cd collection perfectly, but could be a little too much for people who have never heard them before. They are a band you need to get used to listening to, and this is probably not the best one to start off with. ‘The Soft Bulletin’
and ‘Hit To Death in the Future Head’ are better............

However!!! If I haven’t put you off already, ‘Clouds Taste Metallic’ is still great. It is a less sophisticated album than the two mentioned above, less professional and slightly
more childish. Wayne Coyne’s vocals take a little getting used to. When I first heard him I couldn’t stand it, but eventually his distinguished style suits the band and the
music, and is really kind of charming. The band are, overall, less experimental then they have been on more recent years - no theramins or gongs to be heard. Yet their
combination of guitars, percussion and lyrics, with the odd strange smaple, are quite unusual. Most melodies remind me of a trip to the zoo (‘this here giraffe laughed’) and
are seemingly childish, but often deal with some of the ironies and amusing aspects of life Even the sleeve is quite silly. This is a feel happy feel silly sort of album for your crazier (oooooh ceeeraaazeeee) moments. It makes me think of, as a lot of the Flaming Lips stuff does, drilling a hole in your head to see what brains look like, and not minding if a little oozes out. Not sure why, it just does (:)) It does seem quite strange though, that even as one of the more recent albums it is far less sophisticated than some of its predecessors.

Not for the heavy-hearted, but keep an eye out for tracks like ‘This here giraffe’, ‘When you smile’, ‘Lightning strikes the postman’ and ‘Evil will prevail’ , which are
my favourites,
and are also most obviously linked to their latest songs. There are some quite weak tracks on it, but they are still worth listening to.
